I picked up a dead turkey on the side of the road. (D.N.R said I can keep it.) How to I freeze it for the taxidermist?

Stuff the mouth with cotton first. This prevents fluids from leaking out. Gently wipe off any blood or dirt with a clean cloth and smooth the feathers flat. Wrap the bird in paper being careful to keep the feathers smoothed flat and not bent. Newspaper will work since the feathers are dark but be careful on light colored birds, fish or animals as the ink can stain the fur/feathers/skin. The main thing is you want the wrapping to soak up any fluids that leak out and also be sturdy/stiff to protect the feathers from being bent or stained. Do not put the bird in a plastic bag! Once wrapped securely in paper and taped shut, you can freeze it. Be careful that the package doesn't get crushed or bent and get it to the taxidermist as soon as you can.

Should be a great addition to your home!

I wraped it already in a plastic bag. Why can't you do that?

Do you know a good taxidermist?

Plastic traps moisture that can damage your bird. Just like food in your freezer, moisure leaches out of the bird and collects in the bag. This can stain or damage the feathers and skin. If you want to wrap it in plastic to protect other things in the freezer, wrap the bird in paper first and then put it in the plastic bag.

Can't recommend a taxidermist. I'm told Tom's Taxidermy (Tom Lenorts), in Clarks Grove (just North of Albert Lea) is excellent. I do some amatuer work on my own trophies so I've learned how to care for them. Ask at your local sporting goods store.

I will make a couple of remarks as well, sorry if this too late. Be sure the bird is completely dry before you freeze it, wet feathers that are frozen will be damaged! This could make the bird "unmountable". The other writer was correct, use some sort of absorbant material to wrap the turkey in and then wrap it in plastic. If you plan to keep any critter in your freezer for more than a month or two, be sure to wrap it in an air tight bag to prevent freezer burn and dehydration. Good luck!

Do NOT Wrap with things that will soak up moisture! Put in a plastic bag and get as much of the air out as possible! I put ducks in Vacume Seal Thingy Majig, the only problem there is I could damage feathers (But I don't because I freeze the bird in a good position and then vacume seal it). By placing things such as cotton or paper towels in there will only speed up the freezer burning effect. Clean as much as you can and remember that feathers will retain a memory (like mashed tail ends). Good luck with the bird....my advice though "If you have the $dinga$ to have a turkey mounted, why don't you bop your own and get that done?"

I don't really have the money to have it mounted. And I plan on going huntting for them next year. I have to much going on this spring. I have talked with a master taxidermist and he said that wraping it in plastic is fine. I'm going to have him mount it for me also. I don't think I can give out the name on here, but I went to his place and all I have to say is WOW! I did weigh it and it's 25 pounds.

I would like to point out again that it is a BAD, BAD IDEA to wrap any sort of bird in newspaper before going into the freezer. One of my relatives is a very good taxidermist and has been doing it for 30+ years. He scolded us so bad when we brought in a duck wrapped in newspaper. He immediately took it out of the paper, and stuffed it into a Subway sandwich bag and wrapped masking tape around it.

The newspaper will suck all the moisture right out of the bird which is not a good thing. I don't intend to argue with him about the newspaper since he cuts me a pretty good deal. If he wants it in a plastic bag, he will get it in a plastic bag.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
