Here's the current plan-Feel free to add or change something.

Thursday-Meet at campground landing NLT 7am for 7:30am takeoff. 4pm “weigh-in”. Informal tourney, pitch in a nominal fee for biggest Bass over 20”, Kept alive for Verification at weigh in and then released. If no 20” are caught, then the pot rolls over to the next day.

Friday- Meet at campground landing NLT 7 for 7:30 am takeoff. 3pm “weigh-in”. (1 hr earlier for folks to go get the families and prepare for the BBQ) Informal tourney, pitch in a nominal fee for biggest Bass over 20”, Kept alive for Verification at weigh in and then released. If no 20” are caught, then the pot rolls over to the next day. BBQ feast for everyone that night. I will smoke some ribs and pork shoulders.

Saturday-Official River Rodeo Big Bass Championship! Meet NLT 7am for 7:30 takeoff (subject to change if we party all night) 3pm Weigh in. Pitch in a nominal fee for biggest Bass. If it is over 20” keep it alive for Verification at weigh in and then we will release it. Digital Photo’s of other big fish on a ruler in case there is no 20”ers caught. Length must be verified because the Pot could be significant by this point. Donated Prizes awarded for Top 3 Big Bass also. Fish Fry Saturday night for everyone.

Sunday-Informal Tourney-Last day-Meet 7am, 7:30 takeoff, 2pm weigh in. Pitch in for big bass. Same rules as Saturday.

Here’s the deal with the BBQ Friday night and Fish Fry Saturday night. So far there is no sponsor, so everything costs money. Everyone will need to help out one way or another, with either donations/food/supplies/etc. I’m staying at the campground Friday to BBQ all day (not fishing frown.gif). I will need to know how many people are planning to eat that evening. I will pick up the stuff the day before, so I will need a headcount by Wednesday. Also, I will need your donations to help offset the cost of the meat/charcoal/sauce/etc, but I can get that from you on Friday. Ribs cost about $8-10 a rack, so get your order in early. grin.gif Maybe people could grab a side dish when they go get their families.

On Saturday Evening, KT talked about a fish fry. Hopefully someone knows how to catch edible(not bass) fish! If not, we’ll be running over to the new WalMart in town and getting some frozen catfish, crazy.gif . I have a big outdoor fryer and I’m sure there probably a couple already amongst the campers so we should be good there. I’ll bring a huge batch of Hushpuppies to fry up. We’ll need other side dishes and supplies too,( Fries, Oil, etc.)

Anything to add? Suggestions?

HT,

Put me down for the BBQ on Friday evening. If there is an electrical outlet at our disposal I would be willing to make some home-made ice-cream. Just let me know on the electrical outlet. I will also bring a bag of chips and some banana bread.

I think will have to pass on the Saturday evening fish fry. I have a commitment so I have to leave at 4pm and will not be back until 7pm. I do have a couple small packages of frozen fish (mostly LOW walleyes I think) that I would be willing to donate to the cause though.

I'll see everyone Friday morning.

Keith, that sounds awesome. I'm sure there is electricity there. (A lot of the sites looks like permanent summer homes)

Riverdog, too bad you can't just ride up the river anymore, but glad to hear you're gonna make it.

I met with KT yesterday evening. The area he reserved is awesome. A big point overlooking the river. Tall trees that will give us some evening shade. The point will allow for some breeze to hit us. There is a nice playground for the kids. It will be a great time. Please, everyone chime in with your plans on attending for Friday and Saturday nights because we need to know how big an area to setup, chairs, tables, food, etc.

Bumpin to the top since this is only a couple of days away. Who all is coming out Friday for fishing and BBQ? RiverPro boats is sponsoring the BBQ, so come on out. I'm willing to bet that KT will give out test drives to anyone interested, but beware, you'll be hooked for life!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
