Upper Mississippi River Rodeo

Great Dennis, Glad to see you aboard. I got a feeling that Saturday will be popular, but that's OK. People have to work in order to buy fishing tackle.

KT, are all those guys bringing boats, or are some of them paired up?

Any Non-Boaters out there, speak up. Looks like there will be some good opportunities to catch a ride on the ultimate river rigs.

I'll have an open seat from time to time.

Carl Z. and Bob B. will both have open seats from time to time.

I know a few IN boyz that will be lookn' for rides on the river, they are bringing purty glass boats for the lakes.

I hope to make it for some of your event, but it is too early to tell how much or when (Jim H. Big Lake from KT's list). I will probably have an open seat for at least some of the time.

I don't pop into this forum too often. Come to think of it, I don't fish for bass very often either but it looks like it might be a great way to get a little education of river fishing smallies. I think I have that weekend free also.

Tentatively count me in. I'll be coming up as a non-boater, potentially tenting it. We'll have to see how things work out. (I can't quite commit to an A,B,or C yet. Looks like it'll probably be a B + C though grin.gif)

FM get-togethers are the best and this one looks like its shaping up to be an awesome time!

I knew someone would catch me on that.

That girl there was an accident a few weeks ago while crappie fishing- 4 pounds, 4 ounces. Lot of fun on an ultralight spinning rod.

Spoke with DNR about the permit issue. They said as long as we aren't having a tournament, then we don't need a permit. No entry fee, no prizes, means no tournament.

I'm gonna hit a lake when you guys are all there, sounds like to many people for me! just let all the fish go so there is still some left.

Too many people on dozens of miles of river???

I'd be willing to bet my next paycheck that you run into more people on a lake than we are gonna see on the river.....

According to my calculations, that should be around 60 miles of river from Dam to Dam. We each get 1.5 miles assuming there are 40 people. Can I choose mine first? grin.gif

I know some of the guys are planning to fish the Crow Wing and Pine River up North for a day or two. Also, there will several lookn' for some green bass lakes.

All in all, it shouldn't be to crowded...

Any news on the people tally?

I know there were a few non-boaters at one time looking to attend, but I guess its hard to tell people to just show up, not knowing who is gonna be where and when.

Less than a month to go.

A few out of towners have dropped out, but a few have added.

Sat looks like the "big" day. Fishing derby, fish fry, & camp out.

How about some ideas for sat evening?

Also, there is a great play area for the kids

These out of towners are confirmed:

Tom Connelly, IL. Most likely will fly in and motel it.

Boozer & Jimmers LaFloure, MO. Bringing a RP & will motel it.

Everette Forschee, MO. Bringing his RP & staying with family in Plymouth.

Carl Zavorka, MO. Bringing his RP. Will stay at camp ground.

Rod Goodall, IL. Bringing his RP. Will hotel it.

KT et al,

I am still in for Fri, Aug 12, and Sat, Aug 13, for the fishing and comraderie. However, I will be sleeping in my own bed at home at night.

And I am still fishing solo, unless someone who would not be embarrassed to be seen in something other than a River Pro would like to fish with me. As I've posted b/4, I (and one passenger) can get just about anywhere with my 12' Alumicraft and 9.8 Merc. Someday I'll have a River Pro, but until then......

And if anyone who is a devout plastics (vs live bait) fisherman would be willing to fish with me for a couple hours either day and show me their presentation techniques I would be much obliged. If you've read my posts in the past you know that I am a live bait/buzz bait fisherman. But I am willing to learn some new tricks. Any takers?!

What time are we getting together in the mornings and then reconvening in the afternoons/evenings?

KT, I'm still drawing up a plan. Here's what I have so far. I'm off Thurs-Sun. I'll volunteer to sit out Friday to setup/prepare for a BBQ Shindig that evening. I'll bring a smoker and smoke some ribs and/or pulled pork for the group. (I'll have to find out who all wants this ahead of time so I'll know how much to get). Me and My son will cruise the river some on Friday also to see how things are going, share a beverage, etc.

HawgTide Lures will put up 10 Buzzbaits, 10 Spinnerbaits and 10 Jigs for prizes. Anyone else have anything to donate for prizes?

I will use one of the Tent sites for Friday if one is still available.

Awsome HT.

I reserved several (5-7) paved (tar in MN lingo) sites along the river. I figure we may need them for parking. We should be able to pitch two tents per site.

I will be there Friday afternoon and possibly Saturday for sometime (depends on what the wife allows)

Keith if you dont have anyone to go yet, I will be there (more than likely without a ride) so we could show these River Pros how us poor boys do it! grin.gif

Whats the final tally on people being able to make it?

Happy to have you aboard. smile.gif

Shoot me an email at [email protected] and I'll give you my cell phone # so you can get in touch with me when you are ready to come fish. I'm taking the day off work and plan on fishing the entire day so you'll have to call me on the water to come get you.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
