BLB, if ya need a partner for your boat, I might be the guy. They said my cabin cruiser won't work on the river. grin.gif Seriously, I am not comfortable taking my 16' Crestliner on the river unless I'm just drifting down.

Let me know,

Corey Bechtold

My boat stays home too actually.

I sucker rides off other guys. Er,,,I mean I am gracious to be invited by guys that have river rigs.

Although, maybe I better not count myself in yet, since I havent actually been invited by a jet rig owner yet. Doh!!

SH and HT, are ya listening?

I'd be willing to bet though, that there will be a seat open in various rigs when the time rolls around. There should be room for 3 in most of the jet rigs that will be out there I would think. That is of course if SH does a little upgrade this year...(nudge) cool.gif

My partner Carl is getting his own LoPro, so I will have an open seat from time to time. Just watch out for incoming buzzbaits grin.gif

Been a while since I have been on! Since putting the boat up, but the nice weather made me peek! The gathering sounds interesting......am sure the thread will live a long time and the intrest looks good. Depending on the dates, (have a canada trip planned around that time), I would deffinately do some fishing since I don't live far from the Monte area..:)

Hey there marblei! How's the long winter been treating you? Built any rods this winter? I got out wading the monti section a couple weeks back when the weather was around 50. Felt good to catch some bass in the middle of winter. We'll have to hook up again this summer for an evening or saturday of fishing.

Here's what I propose. 4 or 5 days of fishing on the river, based out of the Campground there in Monti. Campers and/or commuters welcome. Meet at 6am daily to pair up, pitch in a little $ for the daily big bass, meet back for lunch, re-pair up and go out again for awhile. Meet back at shore that evening to BBQ, share some stories and beverages. Then start over the next day. That way people can stay all week or come and go as they wish. Thoughts?

How are we going to manage the big fish entries?

Digi cam on the measuring board?

6am? Gosh! grin.gif

You're right, 7am meet would be better. Blast off no later than 7:30. That gives us time to collect skins. Plenty of time to BS and socialize later in the day.

  • 2 months later...

Bumping this back up so everyone can add this to their schedule. Should be a good time. I put in for Vacation that Thursday-Friday.

Hey, guys...

I'm pretty interested in the "Rodeo". I live around Monticello and have a rig that's river-worthy.

I'm not so sure I would want to tent with my bed 10 minutes away, but I'd sure hang around the campfire to hear the stories about "the one that got away"!

I like the idea about switching partners because I am a sponge for knowledge and am excited about learning how to boat a smallie on something other than an inline-spinner or a 3" twister tail.

The Merc 9.8 won't take me far, but I fish that Montissippi-to-Ellison stretch 3 times a week so I'm not exactly lost around there.

Consider the back seat open. And if at the partner switch I get the opportunity to ride in one of those River Pro's, then consider the whole boat open!

Loon, that's what I plan on doing also. Do the campfire thing, shoot the bull, and get a good nights rest (I'm in Monti also) so I can do it all over again the next day.

This sounds like fun and I can sleep in my own bed and have my wife come pick me up if I celebrate too much. Kevin keep me posted and if someone is willing to ride in a "slow jon boat jet" an open seat would be there. KT keep me posted.

Bill, are you in the Monti area too?

KT, Do we need to reserve spots on the campground or is your camphouse the Headquarters? I might reserve a spot for me and my son for the evening campfire sessions. He's been dying to go camping, but I think he could only handle a few hours and I'll have my wife pick him up, and maybe me too!

Hawgtide, I met you at the Anoka and Sartell tourneys last year. I have a 16 fot jon boat with a 45 outboard jet on it. I fished both tourneys with my son. I have lived on the River for about 18 years now.

blush.gif Sorry, I'm bad with names. I'm sure I'll see you out there. Are you going to be on the river on the bass opener? I'll be out there.

Hey guys on this rodeo deal... how many of us actually play instruments?? I mess around with country and blues slide guitar. Wondering if we would have enough pickers or harp (as in harmonica) players in the evening after fishin of course to have a jam... of sorts. Any ideas?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
