Ok...makes sense.

On another note, what kind of depth does the lake have?

The deepest I have found is about 14 ft. There is a plan floating around where this lake could be alot lower in the next few years.

are they planning on draining it? sounds like the politicians making plans without asking anyone who uses it again, just saw on the news that Albertville was a proposed site for Pawlenty's new casino, would be nice if they told everyone else what they were up to. I wish they would leave everything alone, if the water table dictates that the lake should rise, let it rise. people shouldn't be building houses right on the shore line if they don't want to get wet! I feel bad for them, but you have to use common sense! Besides, draining worked so well up on Devils Lake, the water will go where it wants to go.

I think it would be great if they lowered it some and get it back to the way it used to be, the way it was meant to be. Hopefully that would kill of most of the fish and return this lake to a good duck hunting lake.

Does anyone know if this lake is open/closed to bowfishing for carp? if so I might invite some of my Iowa buddies up and have some fun cleaning the carp out

I dont think dropping the lake has anything to do with homeowners on it, there are only a couple of houses on the lake that are really that close to the water. This is just more of a duck water reclamation type of thing. I am guessing it would have to be dropped 5-6 feet . I have'nt heard any specifics or timetable for this.

Ya willing to give up any of that info as to where those

other spots might be? Would you be able to access by truck or would you need a 4 wheeler?

Thanks grin.gif

Riverbasher, I have never seen a carp in this lake and thats after trapping the lake for minnows and netting it for bullheads for many years, unless they have gotten in some how recently I dont believe they are in there.

Thanks swampman. I'll have to do some scouting. The lake would do well to be dropped down though.......especially if people want to hunt puddlers....

Spent alot of time spearing on that lake. Lots of suckers and bullheads. No carp. I agree with borchawk, leave the lake alone. If it gets deeper fishing will get better. Besides, fish taste better than ducks.

I spent a ton of time out there spearing the year it froze out last. It was the best spearing I have ever had my whole life... I believe I had 5 houses out there at one point that winter.

hard to find them in the winter ,would take alot of looking,in the spring i have several spots that nobody else knows about, once the ice goes a little more ,it will be alot easier to find them ,when they start stagging closer to these spots

i dont think i would be driving all over with a truck now, that lake gets pretty hairy this time of year,i dont have a trailer or i would take my sled out there looking for them,i would stick with your wheeler, the trouble with that lake is no structure,so they could be anywhere, one spot would be to check out over bye the turkey farm

Was out yesterday, pretty slow, did manage to catch 8 decent sunnies and 3 ok crappies. The wind really sucked! I have never got into the fish twice in the same spot, really weird. I moved a lot looking for areas where they might be staging for ice out, got as shallow as 7', heading out this afternoon again with a buddy, may try to go shallower yet. I think the reason they're never in the same spot is because they're just passing through to the staging area. I'm wondering if they may be moving into the shallow bays? On a side note, the wind created two small pressure ridges on the south side of the main lake, use care when coming on or off the main access, scared the crap out of me when I went over them, one was about 3" wide w/ water in between the ice sheets.

I've hunted the lake 3 times in the last 3 years, even with lowering it the ducks will avoid it, what a circus, each time there wasn't a 200' stretch of shoreline without a spread on it, I don't think Lac qui Parle gets as much pressure as Pelican does! There were 40-50 rigs in the lot a good 2.5 hours before shooting time.

Yeah there is alot of hunting pressure on there. I was there for opener last year. We got there ate 2:30am and there was already half a dozen trucks in the lot. And this was for a 9:00 start.

The year it froze out was amazing. Lots of nice fish. Few and far between now. Did manage to get a 8 1/2 pounder this year. Only pike I seen in a weeks time. Seen a couple of small ones on the ice where someone didn't feel like throwing them back on the south bay in all the houses. Some people just don't have a clue.

Drove by there at around 10:30 or so last night and saw one truck driving around the N. end of the lake. Don't know if they where even fishing or not. Are they going to bite at the access on 117 this spring?

I work with a few subcontractors and they have been doing pretty good out there, atleast as of the weekend of the 12th. I have not been able to fond a depth map of the lake. DNR does not have one either.... frown.gif

Best weed eater I've ever run with great longevity is Echo, I'd check them out

Hey government,  Just give us choices. I don’t care what people use as long as as it works for you. I’m needing a new weed eater. Plan on a Stihl FS 40 easy start. I’m done with the cheaper brands. Just don’t last long enough.  Probably true with the Stormy Daniels of the world as well. Cheaper don’t last long enough 🤭

If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.
