Anyone catching anything out there? I've seen a few vehicles out there on Tuesday, might try to get skunked out there on Saturday.

The fish that were biting have been pretty hammered. They did leave a few bullheads in there for you though. grin.gif

Good Luck to you,

There's a million crappies in there and giant northerns...but you gotta know where to find them...and I don't. My neighbor (dewoutdoor70) used to live on a farm adjacent to that lake and told me they used to catch slabs in the most remote places...of course, finding them on a 6,000 acre duck slough is anyone's guess...the hole in front of the old landing is about as adventurous as I ever got...maybe dewoutdoor70 will spill some old secrets?

I fished the bay where the houses are at the last 3 years, not a touch, very few marks. Good to see it's came back from freezing out a few years back. Just like with the ducks, I'll probably get skunked if I go out there!

caught a couple early early morning crappies, but pretty slow...has any body every ventured out from the usual spot just off the road were they have plowed a monster lake road? I though I saw a house siting way out...could only see it from hwy 37 but no clue how to access that area or if the ice is even safe knowing there are natual springs here and there.

Well, my neighbor (dewoutdoor70) was going to go borrow my trailer to head farther out (from the cluster of houses) with the snowmobile. He used to live on the lake. Maybe that should tell you something...

I, personally haven't fished it much (2 times!) and when I have it's been in the bay by the old access...so I don't know what else to tell you. I would play it safe, and stay away from unproven ice...ATV's or snowmobiles make for safer travel...

I was out ther last night. I left for Indian Lake when I saw everyone leaving the ice at a high rate of speed...I was afraid the ice waves were going to break along the shore/access (like Buffalo last year), so I left. Besides, I asked around and it seemed people weren't doing too hot. There was a lot of noise, especially that guy with the off-road go-kart speeding around... mad.gif

I've been out a couple times early but not in the bay and have done OK on some crappies. Haven't seen too many people racing around but I will keep an eye out...maybe the little mud hole is getting too popular frown.gif

was out on pelican today did ok on some decent sized crappies except i couldnt eat half of them. I cleaned them at home and all of them had the white stringy worms in the bellies but quite a few had them on the meat to. Im not to sure about this lake dont wanna come down with worms. Otherwise the other fish tasted good. fished in the group right off the launch. Thinking about finding another lake

  • 2 weeks later...

I heard a huge crappie came out of here recently- 3lbs 7oz. The guy had it officially weighed and is at a taxidermist. This did not come out of a fisherman's big mouth or anything like that. A freind's mom told me this. I know she is telling the truth. I think it was someone she knew. They also caught a couple 2+ pounders. Anyone else here this?

Seems far fetched, there are some decent ones in there, but the lake froze out (at least partially) back in 2000. That fish would have had to survive the freeze out if it did get that big. The fish do have worms, but the ones I caught didn't have any in the meat.

What are these worms caused by? Just parasites that some lakes get or what? I know perch can be kinda wormy in the summertime.

Natural springs on Pelican? I haven't heard that before - I always thought it was a runoff duck pond. How is the ice out there? Can you drive all over the lake?

lived on the lake for 20 years,no springs out there,ya you can drive mostly everywhere, but, could be lots of ice ridges,or spots the bullheads open up

Not trying to be argumentative here or anything, but if there are not any springs in the lake, how do you explain patches of open water scattered along the northernmost parts of the lake on -20 degree days in January? I drive by the lake all the time on Co. Rd. 37, and can see open areas from time to time...haven't seen many recently though...

there is a spot on that end between a woods and shore, that used to be a road across it, there are big culverts under there and that stays open pretty much all year, other than that i was out there on sled 2 weeks ago and seen no open water

Large schools of bullheads, carp, or suckers are known to make open water from time to time.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
