I didn't get mine, 343E. I'm going to buy one of the archery licenses and hunt when I can during the last two seasons.

My bro. and I got drawn for season A, which is a tough tag to get in our zone! Have only hunted the 1st season once before, with mixed results.

Early May is phenomenal; one of my favorite times to hunt in MN. The birds have been active for some time now, but are usually a bit more scattered. This (among other things) makes them more susceptible to calling, and it also means they're a bit easier to find. Don't get me wrong, you still get days where the only gobbling you'll hear is early morning, but this time period usually coincides with a peak in gobbling activity.

Get scouting for spots right now. This may dictate how successful you are come spring.

Make sure to let us know how you do, and post pics if successful!

How'd you fare? Hope the new job is panning out well, and that it gives you about 1 1/2 months off to chase some birds!

Got drawn for Season C AFTER in zone 343 near Rochester 3 years of trying.

Really looking forward to a great hunt. Can't wait to get some chatter down the road about tips on set-ups, gear, and calling!

Until then guys there is still plenty of ice on the lakes and fish to be caught-------------FISH ON!

Can a person who did NOT apply prior to the Dec deadline buy one of the Archery tags? OR did they have to apply and not get accepted? It seems unclear, and I have not called the DNR yet. I have my permit 225, just trying to get a friend out late season now that partners can help call!

Thanks for any input...

342 - season C

This will be my first Minnesota hunt. If everything goes right, I get to hunt Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Missouri.

Gobble, gobble, bang!

Grand,

You need to have applied in order to buy a surplus tag.

I'll check the DNR regs tomorrow... but if I remember correctly the new rule this year is you can buy an archery tag for the last two seasons over the counter. You did not need to be in the general lottery... I'll verify tomorrow when I re-read my regs at the office.

Good Luck!

I got drawn for my first try in 338-D. It'll be tough to find land to hunt, but I'll be more available to hunt.

Can't wait to hear some tips. What does a guy look for when scouting? Besides birds..... SHould I just sit somewhere and start calling for responses or what?

I have hunted now for 3 seasons but i have only got to be out i think 7 mornings with school and all but maybe this year i will connect i a bird, i messed up on a late season hunt 2 years ago i had a bird come in and i tried to move my gun and he spooked. This was the second year in a row ive been drawn but ive gone the last 4 years because of surplus permits and the like.

What are everyones opinions on using a decoy? i think they can be useful at times but when hunting conditioned birds i think either partially hiding the decoy or not having one at all is better. what do you guys think?

Heard you on the FAN today talking about Red Lake, I was up there this last weekend pretty slow till about 8:30 Saturday night picked 7 in about an hour between 13 and 14.5 inches.

Are you saying I can buy a bow turkey permit for any zone as long as it is for the last 2 time periods?

Roger

338-G. First time applicant and first ever try at hunting turkey. Planning on attending one of the DNR turkey hunting clinics in late feb or early march.

Good Luck,

Manny

RogerMN, that is not true, you can buy a bow tag for the last 2 seasons ONLY for permit areas where the quota is 50 permits or more. I don't know if you have to specify which permit area you are hunting or not. I will be buying one for my son(13yr. old) who got denied this year. You can also go with and help call for someone if I understand the regs. Correct me if I am wrong.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
