Long Point Report

Recommended Posts

Fishing was good for us this past weekend. Just got to move around to find the larger fish. Never have seen that much ice pushed up ever. We didn't go over 20 mph with sleds because of the "ice swords" around Long Point. Be careful!

We did well also. Didn't fill-up, but the size of the fish was nice. Add four pout to the mix and the "old guys" and I had a great time. Caught everythin on dead sticks with the bait right on the bottom. Chubs or shiners didn't seem to matter. Threw every jig I had, no bites. Was out there at sunrise about 29-31 fow and didn't get a fish until 10:00. The house we rented had four really nice pout frozen solid laying next to it. I would've taken them but whomever put them there ur*%ated on them. What a waste! Makes a guy sad to see all them pout going to waste. If you don't want them put them back in the lake.

Did you fish "east" or "west" at Long Point?

I fished west on Saturday, 31 fow and it was slow all day. managed 4 keepers throughout the whole day. I hated to send my brother back with only 4, but what do you do?

The Vexi showed a few down there and showed some interest when raising the Angle Eye but didn't take the bait. Just swam off.

Was also up to L.P. on Sat and stayed over till Sun noon. Saturday brought the best action at about 10 and 2. Nothing but burbs early in the morning, and I mean early. But by ten a.m. all heck breaks loose as the fish seemed to be heading out deeper for the day. Tough to keep the lines down when they started but, it only lasted for about an hour and a half then nothing till 2:pm and then the final wave of the day for about another hour and a half. Caught about 35 fish Saturday with lots of little ones mixed in with some very impressive Saugers coming in the afternoon bite. All the saugers kept were in the 15-16" range with the biggest Walleye being an 18"er. One thing I did notice was that you had to bang the bottom to get them to follow your bait up and bite. Had a dead stick with identical bait6" off bottom that hardly got touched till you stirred up the bottom then picked it up a foot or two. Watched the Vexilar and if it only followed I'd pick it up another foot or two untill this game ended with me tagging that fish or you'd see him give up and head back down to the bottom. Without the use of a Vex I'd still be fishing and jigging 6" off the bottom with poorer results. My two friends 45' from my shack went all day and only caught 5 fish. Glow red was the hot hook for me @30.2 f.o.w. Next time I think I'll either set up shallower for an earlier and later bite or go real deep for an all day bite. Just my .02 [Don't leave home without your Vexilar!]

We were neither east or west. The resort set us straight out from the resort. We were the farthest house out. One of the "old guys" is a regular there. By regular I mean he makes at least one trip a week. I'm not sure but I feel that he might get preferential treatment. Every time I fish with them the bite seems to be better than normal. Could be just my perception though.

We had the best luck with a pink hook with the bait about one inch off the bottom. The fish seemed to pull the bait down to the bottom about 1/2" and hold it. We wouldn't set the hook until the bobber started to move across the hole. Sometimes it was quite a while before that happened. But then you had them. This is not the first time we have had to use that tactic. Sounds weird but it works. Did anyone notice that the water depth seemed to change during the day? When we got there it was 29 fow and when we left it was slightly more than 30 fow. I hate to think that my locator is going bad. Whats up with that?

The ice did shift ever so slightly. As we were starring at our bobbers we felt our bodies kind of sway as it came to a halt and the water splashed around in the holes. My brother and I looked at each other just laughed it off. Coming off, the planks had a little water around them and the east plank was dipping way lower than it had when we went out.

To give you that big of a difference in depth, I don't think so. It was probably all the fish swarming around underneath stirring up the bottom??? wink.gif

Opener and the week after were good.  Not the numbers we normally get but better quality in the East End.  Not surprised on the weights for the Auto City a.  Usually for us we only catch a few slot fish but we averaged 3 a day for 10 days.  2 overs, biggest 27 inches.     Our best luck was 12-16 feet for quality.  When we went deeper we caught more but smaller.  Bass were really starting to heat up.  For me little earlier than normal.  Found some nice Bluegills the day we went after some panfish.  Dock fishing was as many as we wanted per usual.

We will be up on June 8th for the week. It will be our 13th year in a row staying on the lake.  I hope the walleye are hitting the bobbers by the time that we get there.

Those are some fine specimens. Great job

I'm quite shocked to hear that a walleye tournament is still doing a live weigh in.  Virtually every event these days around here is doing a catch, photo, and release format.   Regardless, nice work.  Congrats.

On the south end...   A great week of fishing with walleyes and saugers caught in good numbers.   The go-to presentation, again, was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 17 - 21' of water.  Various schools of walleyes and saugers across the south shore.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well again.   Some big pike and jumbo perch being caught by walleye anglers. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers normally head to the lake.  12 - 15' of water is holding some nice fish.   Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River is closed until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes being caught along with a mixed bag.  12 - 25 feet of water.  Points, neck down areas and bays with warming water were holding good fish this week.    The go-to presentation was a jig and minnow as on the south shore.  A mixed bag as is common around the Angle.

Nice work!   Here's two words you hardly ever hear anyone say anymore.  "grateful and humbled"

RLG, thanks for the shout-out!     Jeff and I are still trying to wrap our heads around what happened this past weekend.  We are humbled and full of gratitude  for having won 'The Classic' for a second time.     We practiced through all the rain on Thurs and the wind on Friday and found six different spots holding big fish.  Fishing was good on both days with several 'overs' in our catch...but would it hold up for another day?   We didn't know.     On tourney day, we made a long run to our first spot where I lucked out on a 26.5"er on my second cast.  Jeff followed up with a thick 27" er a few minutes later, which turned out to be the big fish for the event at 7.26lbs.  We finished out our limit and weighed-in at 10:30 am for the welfare of the fish in our livewell.    There were some big weights in this event which would have won in most other years, but - for whatever reason - this was our day.  Everything just went our way.  Again, we are just super grateful and humbled by this success.  We also want to congratulate all the other anglers who did well and give a big 'thank you' to the tournament organizers who put on such a great event!

I had a good start to the season on opener. Fishing was slow but consistent. I had four eaters in the box by lunch dragging perch raps. Crappies were biting. I haven't been up since so don't know how things have changed since then, but I'm sure the walleye continue to migrate out into the main basins.

Let’s start this by congratulating Brianf and son for winning their second City Autoglass Walleye Classic last weekend. These guys know how to fish.  We just got to the lake for the season. Chores are almost done and I’m ready to fish.  red(new dog is more yellow)labguy

I tried starting a 2024 Lake Vermilion Fishing Report topic but it doesn't show up on this board.   Maybe somebody else knows how to do it?
