Mayfly, when you buy crankbaits it says right on the box if they are deep divers or shallow, it also depends on boat speed, wind speed and when casting, how fast you retreive.First of all if you have not fished since spring, change where you have been fishing, work them flats early in the morning and night, also the rocks and sand along shore are also good. When the sun is high in the sky, work the deep edges of the flats, you know them eyes are very light sensitive. This time of year, I would go with a deep diver(make sure it has a little red on the under side.Always make sure you have leeches, and crawlers to fall back on.Hope this gets you started.(Can anyone add something). Good Luck.

msyfly you can order books off the net, or try gander mountain or cabelas, the books give you charts showing you how deep your lure is running based on how fast your trolling, line size, length of lilne out, and cranks your using. these are great info books. there are several options for line counters available, built into the reel or rod mountable units. i like reef runners, they dive 20+ feet without the aid of weight depending on what one you use. other wise bottom bouncers, three ways, dipsy divers all work too fot getting down deep. cranks are great for open water eyes or structured eyes you can cover a ton of water.

If I were starting from scratch, I'd get a copy of the book "Precision Trolling". (There's also a "Precision Casting) The book will give you the knowledge necessary for crankbait style and equipment purchases. Then all you need to figure out is the colors the fish want--easier said than done smile.gif

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.

I think electric items have their places, I just don't think large commercial jobs are going to be able to work well with them. Can't see a logging crew out in the woods all day changing batteries!
