Looks like mr special and I will be out in the morning. We are planning crops early then switching to norts after that. I decided to try tonka today and ended up icing a nice fat 32" nort.

started on crops but action was slow. Finished the morning for norts with no action.

Hey med man. A bud of mine was out saturday night on one of the crappie spots. He said he put the aquaview down to the bottom, under the crops and it was loaded with pike. He said they were just hanging out and there were a few MONSTERS down there. Guess mabey we moved to far looking for norts yesterday :+) Just something to keep in mind for next season. I may get out there tonight but dont know yet.

I was out on a different little pond that I expected to try for crappies and northern on Saturday and those fish also had a case of lock-jaw. musta been something in the weather pattern ... but I was hoping the bite would be on before the snowy weather pattern hit.

TP, I was fishing away from one of the typical holes. It's a big early season crappie spot, now there's only 3 houses. I avoid crowds like the plague, eventhough my "secret spot" that I mentioned back on page 4 has now turned into a portable town. But thats ok, there are quite a few Crappie spots out there that no one fishes, so I'll hit those up.

I will be out there this weekend and wouldn't find to fish with ya for a bit. What time you goin' out?

Oh yeah, ha...ha...haaaaaaa....very funny tongue.gif

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum,

grin.gif Remember it's Not our fault you have the case of the Crappies Pants.

But yes fishing was pretty good, even though nothing big was going on. Did however manage to catch the smallest perch in the lake though, it was about 2.75".

Went out monday night I caught my limit of keeper crappies, but really had to work for them.

Good luck

Managed to get out late yesterday afternoon for a couple of hours (4-6PM). Had one of my girls along for the first time and unfortunately couldn't get her into any crappies.

FYI---Harty's is closed for the season! Did a major run around looking for bait and got the usual terrible directions but finally found Wayzata Bait & tackle.

Disappointing as the permanent next to me said they were hitting pretty good about 45 minutes earlier on waxies! Yeah right---son had three crappies on the ice before I got a line in the water. Only managed two more before calling it a night. All our fish were on waxies.

Portable next to me packed up and said that earlier the bite was very good on bare hooks and crappie minnows!

Either way I'll be out there again on Saturday but much earlier---gotta cure the crappie itch at least one more time. (got both of mine on my new ultralite--boy was that fun)

Triple play what time were you out and where. You may have been right next to Tim and I. I guess I only met you once so Im not sure if id recognize you. I guess I probably wouldnt have seen you since I pretty much laid low. If you saw the red dakota beside the frabill ranger twin, that was me.

DOH! I see you posted the time. We were out 3:30-7.

Funny Story

We had a group of about 5 drive out in a minivan right by my house. I look out and they were drilling with a hand auger. I went over to drill them some holes but they said they just wanted to try it out for a minute and continued. Turns out they were a group of scholars from China. Before they left Tim had them drilling holes just hooting and hollering. They couldnt get enough. They had also taken pictures of Tim and some fish. One looked cold so I invited him into the house. When I flipped it shut he just said AAAHHHHHHH! They then took turns sitting in the house. They all wanted to know what the vex was...etc. They took turns taking pictures of each other sitting in the house with one of the rods in their hand. I think we had as good of a time and as much fun as they did. Everyone was laughing and smiling ear to ear. Now they can go back to china and tell them they went out ice fishing. The funniest thing was they were fishing 2 lines in one hole about 5" :+)

LAKEMAN

THANKS FOR THE GREAT YEAR AND ME COMING IN AND TALKING YOUR EAR OFF. GOOD TIMES WERE HAD BY ALL. THANKS FOR THE SERVICE, TIPS, AND WHATEVER. I NEVER DID GET INTO ONE OF THOSE PIZZAS YET. Thanks very much moby, yeah, really enjoyed you stoppin on in. Triple play....sorry bout that run around, hopefully I won't screw up too many more nice folks! The FYI is true, I have shut down the shop for now. It is that time of this particular season to regroup and get ready for the next round. I just can't get it done while sittin at the shop, and there just is not enough action to justify keepin all the power goin when we get past Northern, Walleye, and Bass season. I'm still as easy to contact though so if anyone needs any help with anything just give me a call and I'll see what I can do. I definitely gotta say though that this winter was filled with lots of great stuff that all you FMers brought out to the lake. I've never had such a continuous good time with a nicer bunch of members as all of you represent. The contest went well and thank you to all of you who came out for it. Hopefully we can pull that off again with some calmer sky's next time.....(I'm sure Mr. Waldowski would appreciate it). cool.gif

If I don't see you at the lake I'll see you here or elsewhere on this fine site.

Joe,

Not a problem! With the schedule you keep I'd be taking a "break" as well. I'll miss stopping in and picking up a couple of pointers and a little bait but I think I can wing it alone for a couple of more weeks!

If the Shell up the road hadn't been out of bait it really would have worked out fine! (got lucky on stopping at another gas station who knew about Harty's and this Shell station up one exit)

Moby,

We were on the 45ft hole on the southeast arm which is where I've had my best luck. Don't remember seeing your truck but was kind of on the fly since it was so late. I'll be out this Saturday by 10AM and I may have a neighbor boy along with my son which means I'll be fishing outside and they will be in the Guide. Then if we get some crappies probably over to the bluegill spot if it is still early.

Hey tisch, Loc caught that Crappie in that 40' hole where you, loc, and myself met up that one night. TimL caught a 14" white out of that same hole 2 days later.

MM,

I'll be out on Saturday again and I have yet to see one of those big Medicine crappies. Unless I hear otherwise from you I'll be starting at the 45' hole in the SE arm.

Other recommendations?

I'm just looking for another meal of crappies and maybe adding in some gills if the crappies behave early. Watching the posts regarding a March get together and I'd likley be on Medicine anyways on the 12th unless they pick another lake--just need it to be driveable still.

Guessing it might be a little hectic on the lake this weekend as the permanents get pulled off. Watch for me in my blue Avalanche and I've now got a Fishtrap Guide (I'll possibly be fishing outside as I'll have my son and a neighbor boy or one of my other daughters along.) What's the deal--buy house---still fish outside!

Man that's a nice fish. I haven't had real good luck my last few times to that spot but i suspect that the crappies timing might be changing because of the longer days. I've caught fish, just not gangbusters like it has been. I'll probably give it another try next week.

I'll see you guys out there!

Shamrock Landing and Grubens marina have both sold minnows/bait in past years, not sure about current season

I am not aware of anywhere in the west basin to get minnows. Hopefully I am wrong.

The only place on the East end (unless i'm mistaken and don't know of some semi-secret place) that sells minnows on the lake is the Casino bait shop on Everett Bay. Whether they have rainbows is hit and miss. I'm not including Timbuktu as East side   Getting off-lake, the best value for rainbow for me over the last 10 years has been Lucky 7 in Virginia.

was up at the lake all week, water temps 65-66 today, and the crappies are now spawning. did not try for walleyes this week, but got my eye on a couple of lakes.

On the south end...   Good fishing this week with nice numbers of walleyes and saugers.   A jig and frozen emerald shiner again this week is the go to presentation for walleyes.  Rainbows and fatheads are also working and it is nice to see what the fish want each day.   Various areas across the south shore are holding fish.  Most walleyes and saugers are being caught in 17 - 24' of water.  Anglers are anchoring up and vertical jigging. A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well again.  Pound the bottom, jig it up in the strike zone, hold.  Trying shaking the jig and lifting it off of the bottom.  Any kind of weight will be a fish hanging.  Set the hook! A mixed bag while fishing walleyes include pike, jumbo perch and a few crappies.  On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes caught  this week on the river in 10 - 15' of water.  Typical spots such as holes, current breaks, weed edges and rocky areas all can hold fish.  There are 42 miles of navigable waters from the mouth of the river all the way to Birchdale.    Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River is closed until the keep season starts up again July 1st.   The river holds good numbers of smallmouth bass for those interested in bronzebacks.  A lot of bass are caught by unsuspecting walleye anglers. Up at the NW Angle...  A great week of fishing.  As typical with guests staying at the Angle, some fish MN waters, some slide over into Ontario waters.  Both areas are producing.     Points, neck down areas and bays with warming water have been holding walleyes.  With warming waters, fish are in transition and there are lots of fish.   The goto presentation is a jig and minnow.  Gold, glow white, pink and orange are good colors.

I don't fish any secret lakes. I research the lakes on the DNR website with good walleye numbers. I spent a lot of time learning side imaging. I'll scan for an hour or two if need be to find the fish. Nothing crazy for techniques. Either pitching a jig or back trolling with lindy rigs. If either of you two ever want to go let me know

Smurfy, you know where that Kettle guy fishes?  Might have to sneak over there! 🤫

nice fish bud!!!!!!!!👍 i was up last week and we had over 2 inches of rain.........but really helped the lakes!!!!!!!!!!
    • Kettle
So much rain these past few weeks. I only seem to get days off post cold front. Made the most of it recently. Water Temps still in the 50s. Not sure the crappies have even spawned, definitely not the bluegills. Walleye still really shallow
