Lawrence Lake and Other Backwaters

Recommended Posts

What are the chances that there will be safe ice on the river and its backwaters and lakes like Lawrence, by next week?

I have a serious itch to get out on the ice

Last I heard (today) that Lawrence Lake is froze over, but not thick enough to walk on. Fisherman's Road on Lake Onalaska has ahd a few people on it the last 2 days. I checked the ice there and it was 2-3 inches and getting better by the day. Third lake in Trempeleau had several people on it today and the ice there was a solid 2-4 inches. Next week we are expecting some very cool days and nights so we will definitely be on the ice then.

A friend of mine in Winona just told me there is an inch or so of ice on most of the backwaters there. If the forecast for the weekend is right, we should be able to fish a lot of backwaters by Monday. laugh.gif

I heard today that a few guys were out on McNally landing just north of Winona--I can't confirm that, though. The airport lake ice is still too thin, but that should change by Sunday. I may take a drive along the river to check conditions Saturday morning.
