Best dead stick set-up?

Recommended Posts

I like the red, pink and gold hooks... also had great luck with the glow hooks, split shot about 12 -18" up and a lively minnow. Let the flasher tell you the rest.

Do you guys use the flasher in the dead stick hole or the jigging hole?? Last year we caught most of the fish out of the dead stick hole using a bobber set at 7' to 10' off of the bottom and used the flasher in the jiging hole. If a fish came in we would raise our spoons above the fish, but the walleyes wanted a smaller hook with a small minow. I found it easier to glance over at the bobber on the dead stick rather than watching the rod tip.

Hmmm... Guess it kind of depends on how deep you are fishing and how far apart your 2 holes would be. I typically fish with my holes about 3' apart since thats what works in most portable houses, etc. In 30' of water on Lake of the Woods, I can pick up both of my lures on my flasher. Therefore, it doesn't really matter what hole the transducer is down.

With that said, if I can only pick up 1 line, I prefer to have it down my jigging hole. As I'm jigging, I like to see what is going on down there. I always keep one eye focused on the tip of my deadstick rod though, you never know what is going to happen over there. grin.gif

Typically near the bottom. I may play around some with that this winter but LOW walleye & sauger are mostly near the bottom.

You'd be missing out if you don't fish up higher too. Suspended fish are common and very aggressive. You always have to watch your flasher and if a mark comes through suspended, crank up to it and see what happens. I usually won't fish up higher until I notice something on my flasher.

I would say that 90% of the time I'm on or near the bottom.

Hanson, you're right about the suspended fish. They're almost always larger fish and if you reel up to them and they chase it, hang on. I've started keeping my second line (The dead stick, I guess) about 7 feet off the bottom so it's just out of my AZ area on the Vex. Sometimes you'll see a fish come up off the bottom and go right past your jigging rod and smack the other line.
