I have not directly fished the cut before, only acrossed from it from shore for carp, lots of carp back there but i have caught a number of walleyes on a bottom rig while fishing from the opposite shore, i know a few people that ice fish there, but now there is a big log jam about 20 yards downriver from it which is right where i have seen a few houses put up before. I havent tried it out yet ice fishing but maybe this year after someone else goes out that weighs more than me wink.gif

Another spot i have seen people ice fishing before is right out from the riprap at minnecon park about 30 ft from shore, where that old snag was until this year if you know where that was.

I've only fished the new ulm stretch a couple times this last year. What are you referring to by the "cut"?

the cut im referring to is down stream from minnecon park right in the bend of the river where there is a cut back into a big backwater area.

Hey RiverRat56, Any idea who snagged the 15# Wally outta there? I seen a pic at work, and have a suspicion, just not sure. 30" long and the rest in girth!!! After the fire at AMPI, All fish taken downstream of New Ulm will be "pre- buttered" and good to go. Just figured it was a Schells/AMPI fondue that got outta hand. I could only HOPE!!

No i havent heard who caught it, dad told me about it after he got back from work where he heard it from someone else, sounded like a good day of fishing, the guys kid caught an 8 pounder and then he gets a whale, only 30 inches that fish musta had some girth.

ps. didnt know there was so many people that visited here from the new ulm area.

I saw the picture at work. It's definatly a huge walleye. I had slight second thought's about if it was really 15 pounds. I was thinking maybe 12 or 13. Today it was in the new ulm paper as a 16 pounder. The second fish they caught that day was 11 something according to the paper. Where that was suppose to be 8 something. It said the 16 pounder was a few ounces short of a state record. What is the state record? I thought it was quite a bit more than 16#1ounce. The journal has been known to make mistakes in there paper. Or what??

It seems to me, and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong that the state record is around 17.5 lbs out of the Seagull River up at the end of the Gunflint Trail.

lovebigeyes,I see your from the courtland area, do you ever get in on the walleye bite in the spring or fall? Iknow a guy that fishes that area,by the bridge south of courtland he pulls lots of walleyes from the river, Also does real good icefishing.

If it was truely a 16lb fish, that would be indeed a monster.

Does anyone have a pic that they can post or email to me?

I would love to see it. I have always set a goal for a 14lber out of the MN. This ups the odds!!

Does any one rember the big one that came from bellow the dam at Lac Qui Parle last year? I remember it was big but can't recall the actual wieght.

With all that butter pouring into the river and this fish being released it could pack on the pounds over the winter just in time for me to catch it on the opener..... smile.gif I give the guy some credit for letting it go, how ever much it weighed it was big enough for that empty spot on my wall, right next to the empty spots for the deer head and turkey fan.

RR56,

I would hope that the empty spot on your wall would be filled by a replica of that fish and not the real thing, so a COUPLE of us could all have identical replicas. After we caught it too, of course.

Hey Riverrat56, you ever catch any sturgeon down there in New Ulm? This last spring/summer, I guess they were biting like mad. I made two trips down there to try to catch one(I've never caught one before) and failed both times. My buddy although caught one. We had bad timing when we went because it always seemed to want to rain five inches before we went. There was a guy on this site with the username ******* that was from New Ulm that showed me the spots, not sure if he is still around? But anyway, if you have caught a few in the past, this next spring I'm making a third trip in my quest to catch a shovelnose....maybe we could hook up.

Leech i have never caught one, i have landed a few for people and seen maybe 3 others caught, i think your best time is when the sturgeon migrate up the cottonwood river to spawn, thats when people catch most of them, ive never really fished the cotton wood before but im gunna try it out this spring so maybe we can give it a try

O and by the way if i even come close to a 16 pound walleye ever it will be the real fish on the wall, replicas just dont look good to me and arent the same i could call up and get a replica made of that fish now if i wanted to and i dont see a problem with having one or 2 skin mounts of big once in a lifetime fish on the wall, thats my opinion doesnt hafta be yours, when people complaing that you keep a big fish its like saying that you shouldnt shoot the big buck that walks by once every 25 years, take a picture instead and get some fake antlers made because they can do it.

Hey ice cold I do quite a bit of walleye fishing all open water season in the courtland area. I also do a lot of catfishing in the area. Usually do pretty well with both. Does the guy you know ice fish on the river. Also you said the bridge south of courtland are you talking in the main flow of the river or the back water by the bridge. I know that the back water area can hold a lot of fish.
