Does anyone have any good advise on the shortest public access to get out to Sherman's flat for early ice and drive-out access.

You’re almost forced to use the access near the Casino on 169.
There is another spot that you could go out from: near the old Wig-Wam Inn, next to the inlet. However, going out anywhere from Wig-Wam is difficult. There is an “annual” crack that forms from the tip of Sherman’s point, northward, all the way across Wig-Wam Bay to Brown’s Point. It can be very tricky to cross until the ice is thick enough. Even then you have to choose your passage carefully. So, best just to go out from the public access until later in the season.
