park and walk fishing spots

Recommended Posts

Enids Hubby

I Have only been to Mille Lacs a few times and I am looking for information on places that have public or private parking spots that are open in the winter, and a good walleye and perch spot to fish within walking distance. I do not have a snowmobile or a 4-wheeler and until the ice is real thick I don't want to drive out. Last year I found a public access lot right by the casino that was perfect. Also have noticed on the East side none of the public landing are plowed. I would appreciate any information on good spots to park and walk , public or private. THANKS

you can usually park on the side of twilight road across from the conoco and walk out from there. You should see some cars parked there come first ice.

my advice whether walking or not is to go to a resort and pay a minimal fee for parking your vehicle and walking out. that way you get apprised of any new breaks in the ice and current conditions and there is someone to look after you. Afew years ago, a friend of mine and i walked out of a north end resort on smooth clear ice, and after dark the ice moved and piled up a 6 foot ice heave in front of the access running a half mile in both directions. We walked back, climbed the heave only to see a 10 foot wide spot of open water we couldnt get across. The resort guy was out there with planks to help us get across. Look at a lake map and see which resorts have breaklines fairly close to shore and you wont have far to walk from those resorts.. anyway thats my 2 cents

Thanks to Wanderer (Tracy) for extracting me from a sticky situation 🤦‍♂️. It was also nice to finally meet you in person!! I think you need to start a weekend towing business lol. I had a buddy of mine and his dad come out and check and make sure I was okay after you left. Fishing was pretty good I got 8 gills all around 8” and 1 crappie 9”. Dad came out and got 5 gills. We stayed till 6:15pm and I was able to make it off the lake no problem.

Cliff and Byron are planning a Kids ice fishing day February 12. The event is out of Fortune bay Marina  9-1. The event is for Tower and Nett lake kids. I know Cliff is looking for a few helpers.

Cuz that’s just me.  🙂  I just like tinkering and seeing what I can get away with - and learn about things.   Just got done with a fine hone stone and got out some small nicks I’m pretty sure I got from cutting dirty ice in ND.  I’ll find out tomorrow how I did.

Like @eyeguy 54 says, Frank has been the go-to guy for members of this site for years.  He does it by mail and is in Saginaw, MN.   It’s interesting that you ask about re-shaping also.  I know Frank has the Nils jig and the drill blades are curved.  I was considering tuning up my own today before they get too dull but am concerned about maintaining the shape of the curve. Since I was a machinist in a former life, I’m still gonna try it.  Then maybe send to Frank. 😀
