Deer attractants?

NELS-BELLS

Recommended Posts

Has anybody tried Deer cain or whatever its called? Supposedly deer tear up the ground and dig a big hole trying to lick this stuff up. Or does anyone have any info on any other products like it? (good or bad.)
The next question: Is it legal to hunt near it or is it considered bait?

You can use as much of that stuff as you want. Completely legal. Now the real question is, does it work? I don't truly know. We did use it one year and put down a couple bags of it. Nothing out of the ordinary. I can't see that product making or breaking your hunt. If you want an attractant there are many more better ones on the Market. Outdoor Research makes a great line of attractants for all times of the year. I have had some success. 50/50 I would say. The best time for scents is obviously during the rut but I have had some success at other times of the year also. Good Luck

I have tried more scents than I want to think about over the years. I quit using them last year except for some Orion scents doe urine during the rut. I think the scents work ok on the younger dumber bucks, but I feel like the bigger older bucks are too smart for that. The Orion scents that I use are collected from does in estrous the same day I purchase it so I know it's fresh. I drive the 20 miles or so to get it and I feel it's worth it. I think it's much more important to concentrate on being scent free myself than trying to cover up. That can start a whole new topic in itself!

Try using a deer decoy! Then apply doe urine on the tail section of the decoy. Don't use doe in rut urine because the rut isn't going on yet.
You will get more deer to you than just using sents or attractants!
Good Luck!!! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Nells -

I am not sure about the cost of this product, but my cousin used it and got some mixed results.

I just use salt/mineral blocks that I purchase from agricultare stores. Much cheaper and wherever I put the mineral blocks, the block is gone in about a year. Then, the deer still come back and actually eat the soil to take in the minerals that were leached into the soil from rain. And actually dig holes to get the soil.

The Cain gimmick is that it is an attractant. It sort of is, but you should recognize it more of a growth aid and something that will help the deer.

A deer, and many other wild animals, will know that they are lacking some nutrients and go to the areas. Just like you see a dog or cat eat grass occasionaly. But you will not likely see the same animal at the area every day as you usually dont see your dog or cat eat grass everyday either. When there are food sources that are plentiful with good nutrition, you will not see much activity.

My opinion is get three things, one salt block, one mineral block, and something that you would find in your sporting goods store or catalouge such as the "cain" product you mentioned, place them in the same area. Say 15 yards apart, and let them sit for a few months and see which ones get used the most. These things take time for deer to find them, so I would place them fairly close to an already existing food source like an apple tree or a well used trail.

This is what I did and now stick to the mineral blocks, and occasionaly a salt block.

The salt and mineral blocks used for cattle are basically the same if not better then what you find "specially for deer" and are usually cheaper.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
