We have been able to get some really nice size perch on Blackduck lately. Two of us just got back from a 2 hour trip (9:30 to 11:30) and brought back 30 perch that are ranging in size from 10" to nearly 12", that made some nice fillets. Know what we're having for supper tonight smile.gif

Thanks for your frequent reports. Myself and a buddy will be staying with you the weekend of the 23rd and we are hoping that the perch will still be on a good bite. We'd like to split our time between URL and Blackduck.

I believe your wife is holding some maps for us that we can pick up on arrival. Can't tell you how much I appreciate the service I've gotten so far from you and she....and I haven't even stayed with you yet!

See you soon.

Bryan

Where are you folks finding the perch?? I only got 2 when I was up there a few weeks ago. I would like to take my brother ice fishing for the first time and would love to get some perch as they are his favorite.

Thanks for the help

Hi Clueless~The perch are hitting in about 6 feet of water and are still along the weedline. The 14 perch that I caught today were 8" to 11" in size, and the guy I was with limited out, and he was pretty happy as yesterday he limited out on crappies at Upper Red...good fishing trip.

Hope you and your brother make it out there as the perch are pretty tasty!

Are you just along the weedline on either side of the access, or are you traveling out a ways?? I might head up this afternoon to try it out.

Hey Clueless...sorry didn't respond sooner, super busy day.

Have been having good luck at several different spots, near the access has produced as well as out near the island.

Did you make it out today? How'd you do?

Tried for the perch today on Blackduck and only managed the little buggers. We went to the right of the access beyond the contest area. Right out in front of a resort. THere was a bar that we were on. Hope to do better next time.

I took my dad with me today we had a great time!! Nice weather to sit on a bucket and fish!! We went to the left of the access right next to the reeds - were actually in 5-6 feet and caught 13 jumbo perch - largest was 11 1/2 inches, 3 walleye (kept one that was big enough, the other two went back to grow up) and my dad caught a 19 inch pike. So we had a nice cooler full of fish to take home for a fry tomorrow! There was a guy about 50 yds from us that had 7 holes drilled - if he didn't get a bite right away at one hole, he would keep moving. He kept working around and took a bucket of fish - probably saw him pull 15 fish in an hour - some were nice walleye. Maybe you need to keep moving? What have you been doing Drake?? Moving or sitting?
I will be back next weekend!!

RUEGS~How deep was it at that bar you were at? If it's where I'm thinking that's around 10 to 15 feet in that area, try shallower next time, about 6'. Also, last week the bite was better in the morning verses the afternoon. But ANY day on the lake is a good day!

CLUELESS~Glad to hear that it went well for you and your dad smile.gif Bet you got some nice fillets out of that~good supper coming up! (Don't know if you saw when I mentioned it before, but give Jiffy Cornbread Mix a try
for your batter.) Sit for a spell, no action move a little, always looking for the walleye, our luck, won't get those until after season ends and have to send them back in the water!

Good luck to both of you on your next trip out...let us know how you did!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
