Going up tomorrow and planned on fishing Shermans and 7-Mile Flat. Should I start somewhere else?

Thanks, Bill.

I fished Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM in St. Albans bay and caught over 40 walleyes in 9-20 feet of water. Over half of these were between 20-25 inches. I was going to head to the flats but they were biting good in the bay. I used a 7 ft. leader with a chartruse bead and a flourescent pink hook with leaches.

Hi Bill,
I have been up there several times in the last week, trust me where ever you decide to go will be good. The fishing is that good right now! We did catch more fish(and much larger) out at the mud than near shore though. I did not make it on 7 mile, but there were a lot of boats out on it so I am sure it went well. We did well on 9 mile, 8 mile, boot, gregs, fishers and pretty much anywere else we went. Here is my best advice If you get a chance don't pass up the flat just out of Sha-bosh landing in the evening. It was the best bite I have ever seen on the lake, at any given time atleast 1 boat had doubles/triples on, best part was this spot did not produce many big fish, most were in the slot or close(It is hard to find good small fish spots on the lake). Lindy and leech, short leaders(2-4) have consistintly out produced long for me this year. Good luck

Fished Saturday from 9.30 - 7.30 and caught 45 walleyes. Most were under or over the slot! The day bite was slowerf or our boat, most of our success was from 10-noon and from 5.30-7.30.

We did have success on multiple presentationns, lindy rig with 8 ft snells, trolling cranks, three way sipnners, but we were most succesful jigging with a leech. We were in a group of boats on a north end flat 20-27' (near my mar). Our presentation must have been perfect for the conditions. 5.30 pm, North Wind, drift with sock and hopping a colored jig on the bottom with a leech. WOW! Many boats around us were catching fish but not at the rate we were. Three doubles in a row on subsequent passes.
At least 20 fish in 2 hours. What was also unique about this is the fact that we graphed a TON of bait fish and obviously the wallyes were close by.

If I were to fish next weekend, I would go deep and look for the baitfish. There you will find the bigger fish and hopefully a trophy. Good luck!

I was out Fri evening and Saturday. Went to 7-mile, fewer fish but larger average. Indian Pt was on FIRE!! I agree with the earlier post, it really doesn't matter where, just find some structure and hold on!

Fished alone on Saturday from 8-4pm in the sand on the North. Everyone was drifting Lindys with leeches. I picked up a few with that method but when I went to a jig with minnow, the bite really got good. Caught 26 fish and all but 2 came on a orange jig and minnow combo. Most over the slot but also quite a few in the 13" range.

I think anywhere you go will catch fish but next weekend, I'm going to start to head to the flats.

we went out of Indian point also , I brought a friend from church and his two sons (9 yr. and 12yr ) and we pounded them . Neither boy had ever caught a walleye before and their dad had never fished the lake before. the best bite was on crawlers for us but the biggest one (23 1\2") was on a big shiner. the boys really had a style all their own and I think the only reason they hooked so many was the extremely sharp hooks , because allot of the fish were barely hooked. I have been smiling ever since , you all know what its like to take young fisherman out for their first time and hook into them . metro

I think it's getting carried away.

TIME TO LIFT THE SLOTS AND GET THE POPULATION DOWN.

After this year, man oh man...I can only imagine whats going to happen when the nightban lifts....

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
