Water Temp

Recommended Posts

What are some thoughts on the water temp in regards to the bite this weekend? My buddy has said he had a great bite on years with late ice out. Muskieman... thanks for all the tips.
Great luck to all this weekend.

Hi D-man,

If you would...

Please let me know where you find the Spot Tails. We are most likely going to start fishing on the NE (depending on wind & weather) and work down the eastside.

I plan on having the full arsenal of livebait with me (leeches, rainbows, spottails and crawlers). In the past, it seems to be easier said than done when finding those shiners.

With water temps in the 40's I would suspect that crankbaits or livebait with minnows might be more effective.

What are your thoughts?

Most spottails are trapped out of Mille Lacs. I usually get them from Vados but they don't have them yet, but Tutts in Garrison usually always has a few. If the weather stays cool, i think i will stick to bobber fishing and live bait. Where do you get your rainbows?

Hi D-man,

I usually get my rainbows in one of three places. I prefer Princes bait on 169 the best. They usually give you a generous amount and their prices are in-line with others.
If Princes isn't open (often I go up very early, 2 or 3am) I will stop at the Holiday in Onamia, but they don't seem to have the greatest fishing information (mostly outdated and too general). I will sometimes go to Lundeens if I need better (more recent) information.

Other than Vados, which locations do you prefer?

I will also be doing my fair share of slipbobbing. Have you or do you use the Northland chemlites that attach to your jigs?

D-man,

When I stated in my previous post that I sometimes go very early (2 or 3am), obviously this is after the nightban has been lifted!

D-man,

I'm planning on going to Vados as well. How long do you suppose shiners will live in an oxiginated bag?

Spottails are pretty hardy. Most shinners will live in a oxy-bag for 24-36 hours granted the bag was sealed tight. Put them in the fridge if you can. A fridge has predictable and stable temps. Then gradually condition the bag to the lake water.

Yes, MN is very difficult to register anything that had a title or a original registration card. I've ran into the same issue with old snowmobiles, and motorcycles it suks. Hope he can get it done over in Wisconsin for you. Good Luck.

Thanks.  Very similar to my tactics.  I usually haven't started using lead core until August and then we are fishing in 30 FOW.  I will give it a try in 20-25'.

It's amazing how much the water level is dropping. It looks like we've been getting enough rain to keep the forest hydrated but not enough to fill the lake.

Finally made it up to Vermilion this summer.  Between opening our place in Soudan and entertaining the wife and dog I only made it out on the lake 1½ hours Wednesday evening and 3½ hours Thursday morning.  In those 5 hours all I caught was a 10" perch.  I had 3 other light bites and that was it.  The wife caught two 8" eyes Wednesday and didn't get out Thursday morning with me.  Vermilion Fuel and Food didn't have rainbows, and their chubs were very small and pike suckers were too big (they did have a river-mix that looked good that I should have tried).  I did see a few mayflies on the surface so I will blame all of those factors on my lack of success, although my lack of fishing skills factored in also.  Many others fishing around us and I only saw one other fish being landed so maybe I wasn't the only one struggling to catch fish.   Water temp was 65°F in Stuntz Bay and the water level is running 13" lower than last year at this time as shown below.  Good luck fishing and enjoy the lake.  It was beautiful out there.
