Otsego river fishing

I live about 1/4 mile from the mississippi river in otsego. i have been fishing it for a good 6 years. Now that i am 16 i have been fishign it just about every day in the summer. I usally have the best luck in catching carp and suckers, but many northerns, bass and walleys show themselfs too. For walleyes, bass, and northernns 2-4inch mister twister grups in a chartruse or white work the best. I fish off shore in many spots but the best presantation is casting and reeling. During the hot summer nights me and my freinds love to cat fish. A simple 4 ounce pyrimid sinker and a number 6 circle hook with a nice fat frog with do the trick. Its nothing to go down ot my secret spot and catch a good dozen cats ranging from 5-10 lbs a night. The river is one of the best places to fish in my book. its also one of the simplests

PS70 - welcome to the website! It's awesome and full of tons of great info.

I love fishing for smallies (not so big on cats...) and I hope to learn the Otsego area this summer. I got a pair of waders and have been to Monticello a couple of times and want to start working my way downriver towards otsego & Elk River.

Man, I wish I could be your age again and fish all day, everyday, in the summer! Life must be real rough. just teasing... kinda wink.gif

I have been fishing the Elk River/Otsego/Monticello area of the river for many years now. I love the smallie action as well as the cats. Hopefully we can hook up sometime on the river. I have a 14ft jon boat with The Riverbasher painted on the sides. Say hi to me if ya see me

Welcome ps70mlf!! Great place to live and a great time to be alive!!

Are the pyramid sinkers a frog-specific rig for you? I've often wondered what the advantage is to the pyramids.

I use pyrmid sinkers no matter what bait im using , i prefer them because they hold great and they dont snag up at all. around here i fish in strong current and need the holding power

Did you have any luck?     I got a bird but didn’t really do much for pics worth showing.

It depends on a lot of factors, I suppose.   I hung on to my last gas auger for a few years after getting into electric but I never used it so I finally sold it.  Haven’t missed it one bit.  You bet it was reliable though.  Still started on the second pull for the new owner.   After trying several options in the electric world, I’m currently settled on a Strikemaster 40V with Liteflight bits.  With 2 fully charged batteries, I fish all day in Canada, cutting 10 inch holes.     What I’ll agree with is, if you search by drilling and flasher sonar, you will probably be more comfortable with the run time of a gas auger.  When you start incorporating GPS mapping, forward facing sonar, and saved waypoints, you don’t need to Swiss cheese every spot you fish.  I can still run through both batteries when the fishing isn’t great but I never feel like I have to count my holes.  It’s more like: Did I need the second battery before the middle part of our fishing hours?  If I still can’t catch fish after running out 2 batteries, it doesn’t matter cuz the fish just ain’t biting.   That’s fishing on the dark side! 😉

Yep, that's where I was🤪. Best fish were way up in the shallow boulders...   And.....if the 3 or 4 people that read this want to fish it.... go right ahead😁😏  My bass spots are no secret....trophy panfish spots, that's another story🤪
