After Ice-Out Crappies

Guest

Recommended Posts

Which harbors seem to attract the bigger Crappies, and furthermore, how soon after ice out or after the ice is out of the harbors are the Crappies in?

I hear alot about this but have never experienced it.

Thanks for your information

PCG,
I have found some ice out crappies in the harbor just north of wigwam bay. The problem is timing. Some years there are in there thick other years its not worth the effort. I'm not sure but water levels may have something to do with it.

Good Luck Jbug!

Someone told me they are in the harbors as soon as there is a few hundred yards of open water...Although I would think alot of Pike would be in too at that time.

Guess I'll never know if I never try. :-)

It seems the ice-out bite is real good or not worth it. Depends on the year. I have seen the day the ice has gone out the crappies supper thick in the Isle bay boat launch. Biting like crazy. Another good spot is on the road to the state park. There is a culvert that attaches to a backwater area. The warmer water there attracts them and bait. Can fish both of these spots from shore. I'm sure there are other spots all around the lake. If you get into them they are usually big. 1 lb. plus fish. Mille Lacs is just like other lakes. Some years they go right away. Other years it takes a week of warming to get things going. Some years nothing happens. Others it lasts for weeks. Seen both. Calling ahead sometimes helps. Don't know till ya go. Good fishing.
