Blizzard Hunting, how did everyone do?

Recommended Posts

Dean Schellinger

I hunted the Mississippi both Saturday and Sunday in the Blizzard. That is what I call duck hunting. We did quite well on Saturday, getting geese and mallards. There were alot of geese in the area, at one point three flocks converged and were all locked up over the decoys, 350 birds, what a site. Sunday was tough, with the 30mph winds and sideways snow the number of birds around decreased dramatically. We did mannage a goldeneye and a nice drake hoody. My friend knocked that thing down out of the stratusphere. We messed up on some mallards which were few and far between. It was a blast just being out there and hunting in those conditions. How did everyone else do?

Was out west of Morris on Saturday and got two roosters. Lot of geese in the area (and in range) now that the season is closed. Only saw one small flock of Mallard in the fields during the entire trip. Thought there would be more ducks.

Saw only one duck, and that was when he cruised into our dekes while we were picking them up.

Water that had held litterally thousands of birds on Monday held absolutely zero by Thursday. Must have sensed the approaching storm and boogied out.

Overall, it was a poor season on the days I was able to hunt, but after the last 3 seasons, which were beyond exceptional, we were due for a sub-par one.

Counting the days till next season already!

Hello,  I have an older model minn kota trolling motor.  Its a 1999 All Terrain Power Max 44lb Thrust.    I cannot seem to find a new foot pedal system for it. Should I just get a new trolling motor? Thanks in advance for any help

It’s the greatest experience to take a kid duck hunting on youth day. There is not enough kids out there to chase the ducks away. When I take kids o rarely see another person hunting. I wish they had youth day when I was a kid. Stop being selfish and give the kids a chance!

I think that's a great way to do it.  Probably only takes a minute to put it on or take it off.

The guy I bought our place from had an 1/8" cable right down the center of the whole dock. I'll likely move towards a more invisible, section by section approach. However, the full length cable setup has been effective and not as intrusive as one may imagine. Really easy to fasten all the sections at once. May be able to see in the attached

Headed north to a little perch and walleye lake this morning. The day didn't start the greatest, go to take off from the landing and the boat porpoised like a mofo... Ah crap forgot the plug haha haven't done that one in a few years... The day got better from there, we found fish stacked up on the wind blown weed line... There were so many fish I assumed they were schools of big perch, but they were mostly smaller walleyes with some real nice keepers mixed in... Crawlers under a bobber were the ticket... They would hardly touch a leech.

Many of you FM long termers remember FisherDog from way back...he used to post all the time before he moved to Florida.  He was up for a couple days this past week and we got on a good crappie bite in the area, he is a Crappie Guru and man we worked hard but had fun...boated well over 100 in 2 days on the outside weed edges...many absolute Donkeys. Kept a few smaller ones so he could have a fish fry for his family...couple of pics...he's in the blue shirt.

Any action out on Gull?  I have tried a few times and have had some success pulling rapalas but finding areas void of weeds is getting harder and harder.  Just curious how others are fairing out there.  I am thinking I need to get out there during the day and try small jigs and 3" minnows as that is what have been in the guts of the fish we have cleaned.

I have a buddy that has a cabin on the lake and he will fish the walleyes over deep water and also in the weeds as they seem to relate to both at times.  Seems like a hard lake to pattern but he always seems to catch something out there.  Good Luck

so just curious how is the water situation in the area?  the document didn't open and I don't get up in the area as often as I would like but I have heard of quite a few storms roll through the area.  I know the sentiment earlier this year was it was gonna take a lot to get things going in the right direction, so has that started to happen or still way below normal?  Thanks
