Rushpoint store's forum is reporting 2 Trucks and 1 ATV have taken the plunge on West Rush as of today 01/20/04. Ice Ridge between Cigar and Brahm Islands is UNSTABLE.

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

Needing some location assistance with this. One thing about this forum is that I feel comfortable about asking a stupid question with feeling super stupid, so at the risk of that... here is my question. I have fished Rush quite a few times and have my favorite places to go, but not familiar with all the island lingo. I know where cigar is, but I am not familiar with brahm island. Is that the closest one to the boat landing with the little channel between it and cigar? In the summer there is a short dock that comes out from it and there is a swimmers float near it?
I have not been on Rush this winter yet.. having a perminent on another lake has been too conventient... but I am planning on expanding my horizons this Saturday on Rush with some friends from out of town and would hate to sort'of "sink the ship".
Thanks,
Hooks

The island you have mentioned is Braham Island. It is the one closest to the public landing. The small channel between Braham and cigar is never a safe place to drive, every year someone goes in there. Since now know Braham and Cigar Islands the Island to the south of those two is called Wilson Island. Hope this helps.

Hey Hooks!

You got some good info from the Johnoator! The key to ice safety on Rush and for any lake for that matter, is NEVER attempt to drive anywhere that the lake narrows considerably! Another place to stay awy from is obviously the channel between East and West, the narrows south of Crane Island (that is the island on the far south side of West) Stay away from the channel into Little Lake. be careful on East Rush if you go through the narrows into Lower lake. If ya stay where there is traffic you will be just fine!

Hey,
Thanks for the info. I was wondering if brahm was a spelling error, but also did not know that island was called braham. I knew that little channel by cigar that I described, was not a good place to go, but wanted to make sure that I didn't go someplace that I shouldn't. Going through, can make a fun trip into a bad trip very quickly!! Maybe run into you if you are out there on Saturday. And thanks again for clearing things up.

Braham Island was also referred to as 'Bankers Island' at one time.....since the original property owners were....you guessed it...Bankers!! (They were the only ones who could afford it!!!)
And....to make matters worse...Wilson Island was reffered to as 'Pig Island' at one time....my understanding was someone brought pigs over there.....not real sure on that one, however....but both those were topics I heard about in the past....

Enjoy those bits of trivia!!! and....
Stay Safe!!

glad to hear i'm not the only one who needs a little help with the locations on this lake. I usually enter from cj's and fish the edges of the 40ft hole straight out from the access. am I going to run into this ridge?

wher is the safest place to drive from the public launch over to the deep hole by cigar?

wolfboy,

I'd assume there's a pretty well worn trail from the access to that deep water. Follow that. If you're concerned, walk out. No shame in being safe, and there's nothing wrong with a little excercise.

I was out there yesterday. There is a pretty worn path out to cigar city as well as pretty worn paths out to other cities on the lake. And by the way, We didn't do awsome with the crappies, but we had one heck of a good time. We caught enough to keep us content out there and to beable to raz each other between the two portables as to who was going to catch the biggest, the most and to reminisce and laugh about our deer hunting this year. I think that my friends from out of town went back with the feeling of a fun filled day. That is what it is all about. Good luck to all and I hope you have as much fun as we did!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
