Ice conditions are slowly improving, but extreme caution is advised. We've been on a roller coaster of weather conditions this month and the lakes that had been forming good ice during early November opened back up. Newly forming ice was set back last weekend (11-23-03) by about 10 inches of snow and high winds. Now only the smallest, shallowest lakes in the area have ice thick enough ice to support foot traffic. White Oak Lake at Deer River has about 2 inches of poor quality ice and a couple of anglers that intended to do some tip-up fishing on Wednesday 11-26, changed their minds and left the lake when they encountered excessive cracking about 100 yards off shore.
We will be watching and checking the area lakes this weekend and post new reports every couple of days.
