I was always drilling my friends for info, well one of them told me about this site. It did look way different back then. I didn't have much to say the first couple years.I registered Feb. of 2000. must have been around the very start of FM. When was FM first online?

I believe a friend pointed it out to me way back in early 2000. I was originally known as Bornofice, but decided to go with my real name so people could egg my house if I angered them. smile.gif

Jim W, Skeets, GullGuide (Tom Herman), Dark30, Fishhead (Dennis Steele), Guideman, Rick...I'm trying to recall all the original contributors. Anyone else remember when there was about 300 of us sharing knowledge and jabs.

I got the urge to head to URL to check out the slabs, & found this as a link on the Waskish Minnow Station site. Thanks to all who operate it, and all the FM contributors who selflessly offer tips and information to those not as experienced! It's great that the FM members are willing to share their experiences with everyone.

I can't remember! It was December 1999! If I had to think really hard, I would say a search engine is the culprit. smile.gif

Coincidentally I found this site the same way several other people did. Winter/early spring of 2001 I was looking for info on URL, I think it was on the hudek's website, but I am not sure. It was one of the url sites. I think I had 250 plus posts, but when the system went down recently it lost my name so I reregistered under the same name and started over again. Anyways I think I origanally found this site in feb. of 2001.

I found FM doing a search for fishing reports on various MN waters. Little did I realize then how it would impact the enjoyment of the greatest sport in so many ways.

Last fall I met rmh20 through another fishing site. We hooked up for a night of trolling on Mille Lacs last fall. He told me about this site and I have been hooked ever since. I spend most my time on Mille Lacs, Winni, and Green(Spicer). The info I get from this site on all three of these lakes keeps me coming back for more. Look for a lot more reports next summer.

I can't remember exactly how I found this site but it may have been passed along from a buddy. One thing I have noticed of late... the popularity of this site seems to have grown at the same rate another site I frequent has declined.

With the increased participation... I am enjoying this site more and more.

Schnauzer-

I think the popularity has something to do with the temperatures dropping and ice fishing season fastly approaching grin.gif Couldn't help myself with that one. There was ice on the bird bath at my parent's house this weekend and all I could think of was augering a hole through it so the birds could drink! grin.gif

Like I mentioned in my original post, one of the reasons I found this site was I was looking for ice fishing info for Upper Red Lake. For up to date, up to the minute ice conditions, thickness, snow cover, etc, this is hands down the #1 place on the internet!

I don't remember the first time I came across this website. But I became a regular after minneman told me about it when I went to LOW with him last ice season.

Thanks for the kudos. I'm sure just as many think the other way and are just too polite to say it. I thank you guys as well. smile.gif

I would like to get to meet all of you and many of the FM staff would love to meet as many of you as possible.

Please plan on attending an ICE Series Event this Ice Fishing season or at least an ice fishing FM gathering.

We love to have fun out on the ice and if you like to have fun, then getting together is the thing to do this year.

Please consider joining us.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
