IMHO, if you are weighing, price vs. quality the ONLY way to go is an Abu Garcia Ambassaduer. These things are work horses and with regular cleaning will last you a long long time. If money is no object then pick up the Ambassaduer Morrum, now that is one SMOOTH reel.

lemmee guess, it had something to do with the plastic gears and drag failing? smile.gif
They recently changed their design, but a lot of guy were getting replacements from shimano might want to give it a try. I have the same reel and am waiting for it to fail. So far so good.

I wouldn't purchase a Okuma reel. After a couple of years the drags get sticky. It depends what your going to use a the reels for, in order to purchase a new one. I have 4 Okuma reels, and this is the last season on them. I'm personally switching to Diawas or Shimanos like everything else on my boat.

I will second or third the Adu baitcasters.. I have used them for years, with yearly cleaning they just keep on a ticking... I recommend the reels to all that ask!!!

Well, After 5 years of loyal trustworthy service, my Shimano Corsair CS400 finally gave up on me last night. I bought it at a fishing expo in Nashville for $40. It was factory reconditioned but you would have never been able to tell. I guess when you buy something that has already been overhauled once, you pay your money and you take your chances.

On a lighter note, I'm currently in the market for a new large capacity baitcaster. Any suggestions? I was wondering about those Okuma reels. I have one of their spinning reels but have not used their baitcasters. Anyone have any experience with them? They seem well made and very reasonably priced.

I just don't know if I'm ready for another serious relationship so soon after my tradgic loss.

well, I still don't know what I'm gonna do yet. I know that the ABUs are good reels, but I'm one of those weird people that just doesn't like them for some reason. I really don't have any good reason for not liking them, they just don't appeal to me for some reason. Can't explain it. I might come around. I'm sure I would change my mind if I used one. Thanks for all the input.

Abu's are good. I've got a Penn 920 that is an excellent reel. Would highly recommend it.

My Okuma Zonar's bait clicker failed last trip but only because someone released the spool under a lot of tension. Other than that it's been a good winch.

Had my grandpas old Ambassadeur out for the first time in 10 years last week. This thing is more than 40 years old. It still casts as smooth as silk and the drag works better than most of my other, newer reels. Its tough to beat a classic. Polar Bear

I have a Penn International 965, and that is really a smooth unit. Like it better than my Calcutta.

I also just bought a Pflueger Trion 66, and so far so good on that one. Seems pretty nice for a relatively cheaper reel.
