Lakemaster Mille Lacs contour map

Last weekend i used the new contour map from Lakemaster. I was very impressed at the detailed contours. This map will difinetly cut down time in locating contact areas. I was also impressed with the abilty to use it on my home p.c. I pick a spot i plan to fish, set my cursor on that spot and the waypoint pops up. I then print out that area on photo paper to make it waterproof and take it with me in the boat. Its very accurate as well. ...

D-Man

I was looking at the lake master maps on the lake master website. I was kind of wondering how that works. On the computer shows the map of the lake. How is this better than a regular king tutts lake map. Can you adapt things fromlake master maps onto your GPS/

The lakemaster map is a contour map meaning it shows all the depths and break lines. The Tutts map is a structure map. Yes the lakemaster map transfers data to and from your GPS from the lakemaster software.

The Lakemaster program with the Reelbottom map is awesome. The map has one foot increment contours. You can see the structure with incredible detail. It blows all other maps away. YOu can move your cursor on the map and get a GPS readout. I've used it quite a bit and found it to be right on, although I know there are a couple of minor errors.

Since you guys are talking about maps, on the whiffer map, where is the gps coordinate usually on the structures? Dead center, on the edge? Or is it by the number on the map?
Anybody have any ideas? Thanks

Flick, I've found that the coordinates on the Whiffer map put you on the center of the structure. Like D-man said the cards really help if you're trying to find a particular corner. It's not exact but it sure gets you there quicker.

Thanks, do most places that sell the maps also carry the cards?

Yes, most of the places that carry the maps also have the cards. Good Luck!

Anywhere you find the maps they should have them. If they dont then they either are sold out or they dont know what they are. I know for a fact Greg and Mike at Vados has them. What side of the lake are you on? Iam at Rocky Reef. Stop by ill show ya how to use it....

I hear the south portion is now complete and should be available for all by early fall.

I've also heard it will be made available as a free upgrade for current users of Mille Lacs ReelBottom LakeMaster Minnesota Edition.

I'll let you know when it is available, where to get it, and I'll have it here at Fishing Minnesota.

D-Man - I have had the Reelbottom Version of Lakemaster for Mille Lacs since February. I was also very impressed with the detail and spent alot of time just looking at structure that I have never fished. I planned to try some new areas once the open water season started in May. What I found out is that the the southern part of the lake is not accurately mapped yet. Lakemaster has told me that they plan to update the software this summer. The area south of a line roughly from Big Point on the east to Seguchie on the west has not been surveyed. Just look for 3 mile reef out of Big Point or the "Bananna" reef between Hennipen Island and Spider Island and you will see what I mean.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.

I found this dock wheel floating in Black Bay. If it's yours or you know whom it belongs to, go and grab it.

Most years for opener I drive up on Thursday. This year it was Friday afternoon so I figured bait would be tight. The only place that I stopped was L&M in Virginia. They said that they sold out of rainbows by 11am. I got crappie minnows and never needed the rainbows. All my walleye were caught dragging raps. The crappie minnows....well, you know what they caught.

Did you have any luck?     I got a bird but didn’t really do much for pics worth showing.

It depends on a lot of factors, I suppose.   I hung on to my last gas auger for a few years after getting into electric but I never used it so I finally sold it.  Haven’t missed it one bit.  You bet it was reliable though.  Still started on the second pull for the new owner.   After trying several options in the electric world, I’m currently settled on a Strikemaster 40V with Liteflight bits.  With 2 fully charged batteries, I fish all day in Canada, cutting 10 inch holes.     What I’ll agree with is, if you search by drilling and flasher sonar, you will probably be more comfortable with the run time of a gas auger.  When you start incorporating GPS mapping, forward facing sonar, and saved waypoints, you don’t need to Swiss cheese every spot you fish.  I can still run through both batteries when the fishing isn’t great but I never feel like I have to count my holes.  It’s more like: Did I need the second battery before the middle part of our fishing hours?  If I still can’t catch fish after running out 2 batteries, it doesn’t matter cuz the fish just ain’t biting.   That’s fishing on the dark side! 😉
