Hey Bornoffice,
just wanted to make sure what I said was not mistaken and needed clarification on your thoughts.

Just to be sure, I do not condone breaking the law. If the law of the land is wrong, let's work to change it.

Is there any truth to the rumor that the Wisconsin band of indians, are more interested in the Mille Lacs harvest than the Minnesota band?

The Mille Lacs band members DO NOT get individual proceeds. That fella was pullin your leg. Iam not familiar if the wisconsin band gets proceeds or if they even have a casino..

somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the story I've heard so far. I have spoken w/ a local indian tribe member, & they claim that the majority of them aren't interested at all in the fish since they get revenues from the casino. The wisconsin bands don't get much for casino revenues, so they're the ones doing the netting so they can sell the fish to the local meat markets.

BMG,
that's my understanding also. I have never read the treaty so I can't really comment on my thought of WI tribes taking MN eyes?? Seems a wrong at first glance though.

Treaty with the Chippewa, 1837. Article 5. "The privilege of hunting, fishing, and gathering the wild rice, upon the lands, the rivers and the lakes included in the territory ceded, is guarantied to the Indians, during the pleasure of the President of the United States." Seems to me like there might be some room for negotiations here.

I hope none of you are discussing this around the buffet line at Grand Casino. I know alot of people who bitch about the slot and go to the casino.

It seems that many people are up in arms about the slot on this lake. I get up there a few times a year, and always have a good time. I am a Native American who enjoys the sport of fishing. Although I am not affiliated with the Chippewa band, I do understand their point. Please remember most of the Indian people were basically herded into some very restricted areas way back when, and told to live off of the resources available. For the plains dwellers, the natives needed to become farmers. For our brothers to the north, they needed the lake resources to survive. Perhaps things aren't exactly the same as they were back then, but a deal is a deal and our federal government stuck that deal. They at the time were representing each and every one of us. This includes me, and my people. My heart tells me that each and every human inhabiting this earth should have the right to have a fish meal once in while.

I can equate this to the way we hunt big game. We are allowed one deer, or one elk, and so on. Fishing could very easily take that same turn, where we are allowed one of each species per day or what ever. Fishing is a sport that requires skill. I think we need to honor our promises, and move on. The negotiating was done a long time ago. This is not he NFL or the NBA where you sign a contract, and a year later you can re-negotiate it just because. Let's have fun fishing while we can!

Then the information I received egarding stocking was wrong, which is very possible. For that I do apologize.

I'm not one to 'take away from the Indians' but when I see something about honoring the treaties, that is a two way street. I would have no problem what-so-ever with traditional hunting and fishing by traditional means and manners. I actually think it would be worth seeing, but commercial is something else.
As for the treaties, in the the 1855 Treaty with the Chippewa, article 9 ends in saying "and that they will abstain from the use of intoxicating drinks and other vices to which they have been addicted". This mean Indians can not drink, smoke or gamble? Which treaty do we go by, the 1837, the 1855 or both?
I just wish that before any of these casinos were built, some type of deal was struck in regards with these treaty issues. I didn't like how the casino in my area shoved things down the States throat. When they started they weren't allowed blackjack or twenty-one tables. They removed the face cards and called it bingo. Without face cards it did not fit the description of blackjack or twenty-one. Both sides have wronged each other at one time or another.
I don't fish Mille Lacs, but I do fish the area that supplies the eggs for stocking it. Always seemed funny that we supply eggs for a lake that is supposed to be so great. I always felt that if it wasn't for the fact that Mille Lacs has always been a week-end playground for the Twin Cities, most of this issue would never make the news. It's a huge mess that has no easy solution. Neither side seems to care what the other side has to say.

I think it's great that we have one lake in Minnesota that you can go to and catch alot of big walleyes. Who cares if you can't keep all of them. If you want walleys to eat go to Cub foods. Or the other 9,999 lakes in Minnesota. The same people that bitch about catch and release are the same one that bitch when you can't keep all the fish you want. Remember before the slot limit started how ****ty fishing was on Mille Lacs?

I have heard it's because of the drought. I know in my area ( meeker co.) the sloughs that they trap minnows in have dried up.
    • SkunkedAgain
Excuse my ignorance, but was is driving the bait prices? Usually the shortage is due to a late ice-out from the swamps and streams. This year should have been much better.

I should probably learn to use the 6+ containers of lures I have collecting dust in my tackle box. We got on a decent crappie bite the last couple of evenings and I broke out some plastics.  I caught some crappies on them ,just need to build my confidence in using them! I did notice they didn't seem to hold on to them as long as minnows!

      Great news, thank Skunked

Minnows are 50 cents each, and leeches are $50 a pound.
    • SkunkedAgain
Absolutely. I get full bars all-along the drive from Cook to The Landing, and out into Head O Lakes bay. I can't say that I've stared much at my phone signal anywhere else besides on my way to Black Bay. We still don't get much for service there because there are a lot of steep slopes with tall trees in the way. That was expected though. The tower is definitely providing better service to the area in general IMO.
    • PSU
Any updates on this new tower? Has it helped AT and T customers throughout the lake get better service?

Thanks for the heads up. Cigar.

The price will blow your mind if they get some

Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!
