I have not fished the big lake very much in the past (probably because I have not had much luck)any and all tips for patterns and locations would be helpful! Thank you in advance. I will return the favor when I can.

Without writting a book, here is a good starting point for the Mille Lacs beginner.
May:
Drift sand (8' to 20') during the day with lindy rigs or bobber fish rock reefs (4' to 12') after 8:00 pm.

June:
Drift gravel bars ( 20'+) with lindy rigs, bobber edges of mud flats or drift with lindy rigs near edges of flats.
July:
Mud flats.
August:
Fish in Canada

some advice - don't dragg the bottom while fishing the flats ... dragging the mud really stirs things up & usually drives the fish elsewhere. instead of using a lindy rig, try a 3-way swivel, using a 1 1/4 ounce or heavier sinker to get you down close to the bottom while your 6'-12' snell floats behind ... also, move very SLOW. watch your locater - if you see the depth change, give or take in line accordingly so your sinker remains close but OFF the bottom.

If I were going up right now I would look to the deep gravel. Get a good map and search out 4 or 5 mile or Sloppy Joes. You should see boats on any of these during the day. When you get there use 3 ways or bottom bouncers and work the deeper edges. Spinners and crawlers or leeches should get you some action.

boss-10 of the guys from st cloud went on a launch monday night. the weather got nasty and they had to leave early -8:00pm they caught 10 and could only keep 1 witch they tossed back it was so small, the rest all fell into the famous slot size that has been reinstated, I was born and raised on that lake, private guided for groups of 3-4 from st cloud for ten years; lots of fun. when there in early(the north whole end is great) day or night, same with the east shore, (july and august),--nights only. drifting has always been my thing with crawlers and leeches, never used a minner till ice

Thank's for the tips. I especially like the small flat option. I fished Sloppy Joe's Sat. and caught 3 did not even measure them all were nice though. Should have fished prime time not the middle of the day maybe we would have caught more. The CO was at the access too so I would make sure your length is good before taking any home!

I have heard it's because of the drought. I know in my area ( meeker co.) the sloughs that they trap minnows in have dried up.

Excuse my ignorance, but was is driving the bait prices? Usually the shortage is due to a late ice-out from the swamps and streams. This year should have been much better.

I should probably learn to use the 6+ containers of lures I have collecting dust in my tackle box. We got on a decent crappie bite the last couple of evenings and I broke out some plastics.  I caught some crappies on them ,just need to build my confidence in using them! I did notice they didn't seem to hold on to them as long as minnows!

      Great news, thank Skunked

Minnows are 50 cents each, and leeches are $50 a pound.

Absolutely. I get full bars all-along the drive from Cook to The Landing, and out into Head O Lakes bay. I can't say that I've stared much at my phone signal anywhere else besides on my way to Black Bay. We still don't get much for service there because there are a lot of steep slopes with tall trees in the way. That was expected though. The tower is definitely providing better service to the area in general IMO.

Any updates on this new tower? Has it helped AT and T customers throughout the lake get better service?

Thanks for the heads up. Cigar.

The price will blow your mind if they get some

Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!
