Lunker Caught in Wahkon

A Mille Lacs angler named Darrel had a nice surprise at 7:30 this morning!

Darrel had been angling all night long. The only action he had was a 22 1/2 inch walleye that bit at 12:30 am, and a few pesky perch. Since the big game would be on in a few hours, he decided to call it quits and head back home to Amery, WI.

He packed up all of his gear, all except for the lines. Darrel said, "the lines are always the last to come up." As he started to pull, he heard the rattle reel behind him make a little noise. He watched as it barely bobbed up and down one time. (Another perch, he thought.) Suddenly the bobber went down and stayed about 7 inches under the surface.

He pulled and realized it was NO perch! This fish was a big one! After fighting the fish for a few minutes, he finally got it onto the ice. The moment it hit the hard surface, the old white jig fell right out of it's mouth. (Must be Darrel's lucky day!)

It was a hefty 28 1/2 inch walleye weighing 9.2 pounds!

Darrel said he was angling about 3 miles out of Wahkon Bay in 22 1/2 feet of water. He was bobber fishing with a golden shiner about 14 inches off the bottom.

Darrel reminds us to "never leave early!"
