Any Gun Experts??

I went to sight my 30-30 today. I took a few shots at 100yds and was tight low and right. I moved to 25 yds and shot two. the same thing, low and right. I fixed it at 25 yds and hit the dead center. I then went to 50 and my pattern broke a bit. I was shooting a little high. I was out of shells so I left. Will go again tomorrow hopefully. My question is I guess, If i'm hitting bullseyes at 25 yds should I be hitting them up to 100 yards?? Hope I can get some help here....Thanks!

I'm a little high at 100 yards also. The way the bullet drops after 100, it's not bad to be high at that distance.

I am by no means a gun expert, but you need to know the ballistics of the round you are shooting. Perhaps being dead on at 25 yards means that you will be high at 100 yards, but right on at 150.

The suggestions from the others here are good ones, although the trajectory of a 30-30 is not that similar to a 30-06.

I would sight in for 100 yards if you won't see any shots over 150. Take breaks to allow your barrel to cool while sighting in and, by all means, use the same shells to sight in as you are going to use while hunting.

Good luck!

Well I help out at Beaverbrook rifle range each year for the annual sight in.I can tell you this, a 30-30 is not nearly as powerfull as a 30-06.If your dead on at 25 you will be just a 1/4 low at 100 yards.A 30-06 dead on at 25 is 1inch high at 100 yards.

Now given that info you must also stay with the same brand and weight bullet.DO NOT switch weights now after shooting up that last box,a lighter bullet will not give you the same results.
As for brand do try to stay with the one you just had, as each manufacture uses differant propellants and they may not be the same as the one you used first.

I doubt you will find a range open this late so you may have to stay where your at for now.But if you do get a chance to shoot again remember to keep the same sight picture and fire three consecutive rounds at 100 yards.See if all are grouped close then adjust from there if needed.
Remember to lightly tap the scope after each adjustment to settle the gears in to each other so the next adjustment will not have any slack to take up as you move the windage dials.
If you have a side mount scope then you may have to settle for close enough as they are more tricky to get zeroed.
A 30-30 cal. is a fine close range weapon for whitetail, but don't expect perfect bullseyes at 100 yards unless you spend a LOT of time shooting that weapon at that distance.

Good luck, Benny

I think given the trajectory of the 30-30, which is similar to a .30-06, what your seeing is accurate. If dead on at 25 yds, the bullet is still rising, so by the time you move out to 100yds your going to be high.

I tend to site in at 100yds and then move out from there.

If you were on at 25 and high at 50, I would think you should be where you want to be at 100 with a 30-30. If you are still a little high at 100, I would shoot 150 before you adjust anything. You may be right where you want to be already.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
