Golf with a shotgun

Well,it's almost time for sporting clay leagues to start. How many people out there shoot clays? I shoot in one league at Wild marsh and would probably be on another team if I get the chance. I'm also going to try to do some registered shoots. I spent all winter reloading shells and I'm ready to unload them! I started out shooting trap about 15 years ago. I got on a team where I was working to get to be a better shot for hunting. Well, thousands of rounds and 2 shot apart guns later, I still miss birds.
I shot sporting clays for my first time 1991 and have been shooting this game ever since. About 17 months ago, I had surgery for a detatched retina in my left eye. I've recovered almost completely but couldn't shoot any gun for over a year.
I'M READY TO GO!
Ok, I threw the first topic for our new forum, let's get the ball rolling.

Thanks, Scotty

Golf with a shotgun. I thought this about gonna be about the exhibition shooter Tom Knapp. He shoot hand thrown golf balls with a shotgun. I did try to shoot golf balls like he did and if can connect like you do on the green they can really GO. However because of my job I am not in a league of any sort but once I do get a different job someday that what i plan to do. I do get my share with shooting clays with just friends or just me and my son. Just like rifle rounds I just buy the cheapest shells for this type of shooting. I can pick up a case of 12 ga. for about 30 - 35 bucks a case at Cabela or Gander Mountain. Cant wait for warmer weather to arrive. I dont like the looks of those Benelli guns just sitting there. Getting an itchy trigger finger! Have fun and shoot safe! Brian

Hey Scotty,
Great new forum! I spend more time shooting in the summer than fishing.....not sure if that's good or bad?

Are you going to shoot the Mid Winter 300 this next weekend? I will be shooting for Del-Tone Luth. I shoot at wild marsh a few times a year but mainly at Del-tone and other places.

Looking forward to Sat and to future topics on this new forum grin.gif

Tv Boy, thanks for joining our new forum. In the past few years I didn't even fish, too busy shooting. I'm trying to get back. I spent last year recovering from my eye surgery, but this year I plan on making up for it. Over the winter I reloaded every empty case I could find. The shoot you mentioned, where is it and when is it? Right now I don't care what game it is as long as it involves a shotgun and flighting targets. I check the wild marsh website everyday to see if they have posted the starting dates for their leagues, nothing so far. The guy who sponsers the team I shot on in 2002 hasn't called yet. If I don't hear from him soon I will sponser my own team.
Get back to me with that date please.

Thanks, Scotty

Benelli-dude, sorry I didn't mean to mislead you with the topic name. Sporting clays is sometimes discribed as "golf with a shotgun" Have you ever met Tom Knapp? I got to see him shoot once at a fund raiser and I sat with him a couple a years at our local Pheasants Forever banquet. Great guy! Any body that owns a Benelli should see him shoot.

Yes I have met Tom Knapp. Great guy as well as a great shot. Got to see him perform 3 times now and will again this year up here at Warroad. Last year I took my boys ( 2 and 4 yrs old ) and they loved it. Took a couple of pictures of them with him. Kinda neat! I got a few of his videos and they like to watch them once in awhile. Even had him autograph my Montefeltro which he was more than honored to do. That guy is unreal as far as what he can do with a shotgun. If anybody ever gets a chance to see him you'll know what I mean! Brian

Scotty,
It is a 2 day event. The first day you shoot 100 targets at Wild Marsh ( they have doughnuts/ coffee for the shooters) then everyone drives up to Rice Creek where a lunch is served and you shoot another 100 targets. Sunday is out at Del Tone where they spred their course out over their entire trap range.

It used to be a 400 but I don't know why Rum River no longer participates.

Call wild marsh or Paul Braun @ DelTone Luth. There is a traveling trophy for the Club with the best team. It is a fun shoot! weather is always a factor, usually one of the days it is cold and windy.

Nice!   It would be great if they had some kind of brake, so you don't end up on your neighbors YouTube video going down the driveway! 😆

Last month I went searching online for a trailer jack with pneumatic tires. Instead I found the video below showing a relatively quick and easy upgrade to your existing jack:     It's worked pretty well. I definitely had to mess around with finding the right combination of spacers, washers, and locknut pressure that wouldn't bind up the wheels. However, it is a pretty sweet setup and allows me much better control. We live at the end of a half-alley. My garage faces the end so when I need to hook my boat up to the truck, I have to pull it out into my driveway and then swivel it 180 degrees to face towards the street. The handle is what really makes the difference and now the trailer jack wheels don't slide on the asphalt. Has anyone else done this conversion?

I've got a pile of crawlers ready to go - a nice side benefit of all the rain in the metro lately.   At the very least, I hope that the remaining trappers are making some better money off of the higher prices. I would think that it would be a great way for local kids to make some cash. I can see why it wouldn't make for a great way to make a living as an adult.

Went out yesterday with the sunshine. I did find crappies in the shallows on a darker stained lake with Temps at 58 degrees. They had no interest in my baits

That's part of it.  Several recent years of drought have definitely played a role.   There's other factors too.  MN does not allow importation of live bait from other states either.  That really affects the amount of golden shiners available, most of which are not trapped here.  In other words, demand exceeds supply.   Lots of bait trappers and dealers have simply hung it up in recent years.  Its hard work for not much money.  The two nearest me are both done as of last October.  They both told me its just not worth it anymore.  One of them had been there for 45 years.   My advice would be to learn how to effectively fish with artificial lures more often.  I've slowly weened myself off the use of live bait nowadays.

Think the Free crawlers in the back yard are going to take a hit this summer! 🤭

Correction, rainbow minnows are at least 75 cents each, and leeches are $60 per pound. lol

Their coming! Was poking around southern center mn last Friday and found about 20 on a hill side, all to small to pick yet.  Spots on the GPS! 🤗

Water Temps 48-52. I tried for crappies and caught two walleye. I can't even crappie fish. 1/32 ounce jig and a tiny minnow
