Fishing report: Willow creek reservoir

Recommended Posts

I just really got into fishing this year and discovered willow creek reservoir. Since the end of may i have caught ~6 LMBass that were in the 2 - 2 1/2 lb range (~16"). Have caught some in the medium range of 1lb or less. Had one day a few weeks ago on a Sunday morning where I caught ~80-90 bluegills with around 10 being worth keeping to eat. Even caught a 12-14" yellow belly (catfish?/bullhead?) on spinner bait fishing for bass. Since i lack a boat I have mainly been fishing off the dock casting along the weedlines and walking around portions of the lake casting along weedlines. Fished there one day with leeches and caught sever medium bass and some big blue gills. Going there tonight to fish with leeches with my 7 yearold daughter.

I've personally seen (and saw it measured) a 19" ~3+ lb bass pulled out and he said he had caught a 19 1/2" bass there earlier in the summer so that sounds reasonable.

Of course since i bit the fishing bug heavy i've been fishing anywhere from 3-6 times per week =)

Sometimes when I don't have to be at work till 9 i'll get up and get there around 5:30 and fish in the morning. biting isnt that great in the afternoon but picks up 7-9.

Welcome Carl... Willow is but one of many places around the city to fish, yet at times might be one of the best. They all have ups and downs at this time of year. One of the understated places would be the sandpit, accessed from the second street Mayo parking lot. Park at the west end entrance to the Mayo lot and walk straight back along the path to the lake at the end of the houses. The lake you pass on the right also has areas that can be fished, but the weeds may hinder you. The second lake has more accessable shoreline. Good luck in your ventures and, again, welcome aboard. Let us know how you are faring as you fish.

Welcome Carl. You'll find lots of good information on this site. I know I've learned a quite a bit about the area.

Speaking of which, Crappie Tom, are the sandpits you are refering to "public accessable"? I don't want to sound anal about it, but I would personally feel that an offical DNR/Police visit is not my idea of the way to end a fishing trip.

Thanks for any info.

Lew... They are accessible. There is an old service drive which is public on the west end of the Mayo parking lots. You can see the tire ruts between the mowed lawns of the private property and the lots and the lake directly behind them. If you look straight north you will see a telephone pole about 2 hundred yards away, target that and stay to the right of that imaginary line and you will be on the service drive...public property. Parking....a spot on the outside of the parking lot to the right, as you turn into the drive can be used as well as the curbside if you turn your vehicle around. The signs which cover the service drive indicating "no trespassing" were misplaced when they surfaced the drive to the lots, but were left in place to thwart vehicle traffic down the lane. DNR visit?...You can expect them to do thier job regardless of where you are at.

CrappieTom, What species can we expect to find in that second pond you're talking about? Bass, Crappie, bullhead? I want to minimize my tackle selection (as if that's possible).

Crappie, sunfish and bass, The fish are of average size with quite a few keeper sunnies and crappies. They are clean with none of that black spot parasite. The pond is fedby a stream coming into it from the south and west. If it has been raining for a couple days put off your fishing there as the lake will mudy up and have to clear a bit before the fishing will be worth anything.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
