So I was out on Lobster for the first time last night, and came across something that I have not seen in about 10 years. Fishing in about 21 feet of water, I came across a spot where the surface seemed to bubble and ripple. I decided to fish there, and managed to see that it was large schools of sunnies that were causing the surface disturbance.

These fish were all hanging around the surface, and more times that i could count, they would actually jump out of the water.

Any thoughts on this? I was thinking maybe since it is a well know northern/muskie lake, could it be large predators down deep and swooping up at the schools?

I have seen minnows in the St. Croix on the surface and smallmouth bass eating them right on top of the water. You should fish in that area for muskies! Good Luck!

Go for it Hoss. This can be a great situation for catching fish.
Ideally, when the sunnies are on the surface, you would like to see them spooking from pedators chasing them. Maybe even a pike jump out ot the water after them once in awhile.
Prey spooking or not, you can bet that muskies, pike or bass are around, attracted to the commotion.
I have had great success throwing a spinnerbait or crankbait into or around the schooling sunnies. Let it drop or pull it down a few cranks and hang on.

Hoss, I live on Lobster, it is a fun lake to fish. I'll bet what you saw was a school of sunnies that are feeding on small fry, all over the lake you can see these small bait fish in guiet large schools, makes no differance if you over deep water or up shallow in the weeds, you will see this large pod of very small bait-fish swim by.

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.
