I was thinking about going up there in mid september with a couple of my friends that are coming up from ohio and staying at mill lake resort. Was just looking to hear if its a pretty good lake and if that should be a good time to hit it as well? Also if anyone has stayed at Mill Lake Resort let me know if its decent. Was thinking about going to that lake because its only 650 acres and hopefully manageable with a couple days fishing. (last time I went to alexandria for a couple days I went to IDA which was to **** big for me to get a clue in a 3 day fishing trip.)
Thanks

fearme...Mill lake is a great lake. Easily learned in three days...(unlike your experience on Ida!)...scroll down and check some of the other Mill lake posts for some earlier reports.
There were a lot of boats out there on sunday...could be chasin' crappies....the Chain has got a fair crappie bite going right now, and area lakes have cooled off a bit after rains and cooler nights...

good luck and good fishing!

We stayed at Mill Lake Resort for the first time Early June. Fishing was good for crappies mainly. The resort is pretty decent. Cabins were nice/clean and roomy. Its nice having your own dock by cabin. There is about 2 dozen RVS parked there so I would imagine it get a little crowded during the middle of summer. Good Luck

Anyone been out to Mill lately and have some general advise? Going out there this weekend and from the map plan on working the bar that looks like it comes out pretty far with some floating lindy's and little joe spinners. Decent plan or anytying else I should be doing?
thanks

My luck on Mill has always been with cranks, (#11 rapalas, blue and perch mainly) evenings slow front trolling long lining in 6-12 ft look for the weed edges. depending on the cloouds and wind it works during the day also. Mill is a great little lake, my wife would go troll with me and if she got tired of it, it wasn't too far back to camp. Best of Luck!

sorry for late reply...got away for part of the weekend. hope your luck on mill was as good as the weather....a bit of a bite in the night air...but man...glorious weekend!..

our shop is on the NE end of town....for those coming from 94...go straight through downtown...turn right at the last light...left at the next light (by the burger king)...follow the road to where it curves to the right....new mcdonalds, and little dukes right on that corner...we're one block up the frontage road from the mcdonalds....

stop and say hi any time...

As far as a fishing report did pretty crappy on mill, caught lots of small pike and some bass but not a walleye in site, (caught a couple out on Mary on Monday but that was all) The guy that runs Sun Valley Resort was about the most cranky resort owner i've ever seen, his wife was extremely nice but maybe he was just having a bad week.

I second that. We stayed there in August 2001. Lori was fantastic. She took great care of the kids.
We hit a hot spell temps in the upper 90's. Water clarity about 1', green. I asked him for some tips. He said troll the weed edges. Couldnt tell where the edge was in the rental boat without a fish finder. Boat ran terrible, wouldnt plane out. He was of no use. I got a 84' Johnson 10hp that would run circles around the 15hp merc.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
