my brother and i fished out of benzomatic yesterday. we were going out the plowed road about 12:15 and there was a small crack with a wet spot about half a mile from shore. we had no problem crossing and didn't think another thing of it. on the way to our spot, about 2 miles out, we met the grader plowing the east side of the road. we fished until 9 pm. caught all sorts of walleyes and one huge crappie. on the way in we thought we were on the wrong road!! the road was all blocked off so we crossed a little west over the crack, and here was part on the plow on the ice but no cab on the plow. not sure how deep it is in that spot, but dragging the machine up will be a real problem. as far as pictures, there was nothing to see but the blade on the ice and about 20 posts cordoning off the area. looked like the ice had already froze over the hole.

My gut feeling is that Vesty might have gone over an old plow bank. I do not think that people realize that the ice is insulated under the snowbanks and does not freeze down as deep. Everyday I see people trying to "JUMP" old plow banks. I cringe every time I see it happening.

I assume there's been other situations when graders have gone through. I seen some pics in the Waskish Bait Station link showing various machinery stuck in mud and ice. I'm naive to how you've dealt with these situations in the past. I'm sure each situation was unique, requireing different tactics. Is this one worse than the others? Are the submerged graders pulled out with other graders on ramps or hoisting them up? Does the state issue penalties for leaveing something like that in the lake? It'd be neat to know how to handle something like that. Whatever is done, I can bet it's a major headache! frown.gif

Kelly thats exactly what happened he was going to make one more pass to push the bank back there was an old crack that followed the road along the bank. I will be taking pictures and will try to put on here.

The crack showed that the weight of the snowbank had broken the ice and dropped down. What you end up with is 3 parallel cracks 15 to 20 feet apart.
Let us know if he needs any help. Tigger is here now with way too much experience of getting vehicles back up on the dry side. Yesterday we got BJ's "ice cube" grin.gif back up and to shore.

Vesty is OK, I think he is an old hand at this, if I am not mistaken that was his trackhoe that went through the ice in Waskish a couple of winters ago. Photo's are on Kelly's web site.

Thanks for the picture! That was Rays backhoe on my site. Vesty helped get it out. At least the front end is still up so there is a place to start working from.
After looking at the picture again he was lucky that the door did not get jammed shut in the ice.

If im here when they try to get it out i will take some pictures but i have no idea how to get them to the forum. The pictures i took i sent to Rick. He was wet and shook i guess he had some anxious moments trying to get out. I know it shook me just looking at it. Stay away from them snowbanks.

there is a nice article in the current outdoor news about going thru the ice. you have 48 hours to report to to the sherriff, otherwise they take control. you have 30 days to get it out or they will do it for you and then bill you for the expense. lets all be careful out there.

I dropped a 83 chevy truck through the ice in 1992 working out of Sunset lodge, and had no problems with the D.N.R. or local law enforcement. It may be different in other areas of the state but around here they cooperate well with the locals. And the insurance paid for it all.

Thank God nobody got hurt. I have one question to ask. How in the he## is he going to get the thing out? Tow truck or helicopter.

Glad to hear Vesty is OK. He did some dozer work for me a few years ago and is one heck of a decent guy. Post on here if any collection is being taken to help with recovery. I feel I owe him yet cause he didn't charge enough for the work he did for me.

If anybody has any info on the progress of the recovery it would be interesting to follow. Pics would sure be nice. I too would help with $ if needed. The 5 bucks we pay to get out sure is a bargain. I'd be willing to bet Vesty does not have insurance to cover getting it out and making repairs on his equipment. One thing for certain is that the locals up here sure are resourcefull and will figure out a way to pull it out with some old fashioned ingenuity and cooperation. I just hope they can go about the dangerous job without a bunch of gawkers getting in the way.

They will have to wait until the cracks around it are completely healed up before they start working. Besides if anyone has been watching the weather reports with this brutal weather it is more a period of time when you just worry about not messing anything else up out there rather then starting anything new. smile.gif

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
