Red Minnows!

Polar Bear

Recommended Posts

All right you guys, whats the deal with the red minnows? I'm coming up next weekend and suppose I'd better get some (if there is such a thing).

I get the feeling if I walk into a bait shop and ask for red minnows they will send me out looking for a left handed crescent wrench and a sky hook.

Is this for real? (Where do I get 'em?)

Hi Polar...well there IS such a thing as Red Minnows, but you may have a hard time finding them up in this area. Timberline Sports (Texaco on 71 in Blackduck) said that they are having a hard time getting them now. Good luck!

I have seen them at a few bait shops here in Central MN. They called them red mollies. I'm heading up to Red this weekend. I guess when on Red, fish red. It works with red glow jigs!

there is a bait shop in Grand Rapids that sells them and they call them rosies,we have used them many times and to be honest with you, stick with the regular crappie minnows unless you don't mind paying $4.50 per scoop for them. we have not noticed they are a new miracle bait, good old crappie minnows work just as well. they do look pretty in the wifes aquarium tho.

In my opinion the red minnows or red mollies are almost a scam. I've seen countless people trying them and I have tried them many times myself. I did not see any better luck with them. They do not live well and are expensive. I think they are a lot like a certain color or type of hook, with what we think will work we try harder and are more optimistic. I think if a person is going to spend the extra money they will get a lot better return by buying something for their kids then red minnows. :-)

Dr Tackle in Kelliher had orange minnows
that they called Ruby Reds. I guess they are
hard to keep in stock because fishermen
buy them so quickly.

I wouldnt go as far as call them a scam
but, I havent heard of them doing real well
catching fish either. I guess the question
is will you spend a couple of bucks to have
orange minnows in your arsenal this trip?
why not?

How about flouresent green nightcrawlers?
worth it?.....scam?...another tool?

I used "Rosy Reds" that we had left over from New Years on LOW last Saturday on URL. Outfished regular chubs 5:1 (45 nice slabs). No Scam-Try em.

Around brainerd we can get them at lots of places. Depending on the lake you fish, they may outproduce regular minnows 5:1. Other lakes they do no better than regulars. Seems to matter as to the clarity of the water and such. They are worth the money if going to a lake where they work. Try them once or twice side by side and see if you like them. It's easy, if they don't work for you, let someone else buy them.
They do die easily. Can't take slushy water.

I hit red for the first time last weekend. What a crappie fishery. Fun time catching those hawgs. Makes it hard to come back down here.

We used them last year on red and had great luck but I will say that is all we used so who knows if they are the miracle bait or not. I will say that they were the liveliest minnows I had ever put a hook through, and sometimes we could catch 4 or 5 crappies on the same minnow and each time it went back down the hole as lively as the last. Ben's in Grand Rapids had nice ones last year, but this year they looked mighty thin and close to death. They also had black spots around the dorsal fins, last year they were pure red/pink. Pretty small this time around as well. If you are from the cities or passing through, Frankies in Chisago had some nice ones last year as well. One thing is certain, if you aren't on the fish, it wouldn't matter what ya had on!

Kabilkas in Bemidji has 'em. I think they were like $3.50 a scoop, and they give pretty generouse scoops.
