Best Bite Times?

Me and a buddy are lookin' for a place to go on new years day. I'm wondering if it's worth it to drive from Duluth for day trip. Are there fish to be caught during the day, or is it not productive enough to warrant the drive? Anybody help me out here?

Yes the fish are biting durning the day. On Friday from 11AM to about 6 was the best time to be on the lake. It should be worth the drive.

It will be worth the drive just to get on the ice and associate with good people. Take the trip, it will be worth every minute. Heading up for the first time on Jan 7th and can't wait!

Hey Lundman, it's definitely worth the trip. A buddy and I went up last year for a day, fished for whitefish in our Fish Traps and put tip-ups outside for pike. Caught big pike, saw one nearly 20, caught them 14 lb and better, also got a few whitefish. Mmmmm, smoked. Then moved out deeper to crappieland late in the afternoon for the evening bite. Big city on the ice that night. Our trip was shorter than yours, because we headquartered out of my family's lake cabin 10 miles north of Bemidji. But even though I've moved to Duluth/Superior, I'd still make the long drive. It's that worth it. Even with all the fishing pressure, the crappies seem to be holding their own. Never hurts to find a new scene, either. Happy New Year, and don't let those monster Upper Red pike snap your 4 lb crappie line.
