coming home and looking for fish

Recommended Posts

Hey Minnesota
I'm looking to get some fishing info for the following lakes. Rice, Clearwater, Cedar and the Mississippie River, east side by the dam. Are Walleye and Crappie hitting on any of the mentioned lakes? If so, can you provide some details. I moved to Oregon 2 years ago, and have had some fishing problems. Alot of "Unlearning" in regards to salmon and trout. Walleye fishing on the Columbia is some of the best I've ever seen 10lb + on a consistant basis, but finding them is the problem.

AS far as Cedar Island and the Horseshoe Chain, the bite has been pretty slow. The water is very dirty due to the recent rains. The panfish are pretty much done spawning and the traditional walleye bite has been pretty dismal. There are a lot of walleye to be had but traditional methods are not producing fish. The people getting fish have been creative in finding them in shallow water.ScottS

ScottS, care to divulge any info on the creative ways of catching walleyes in shallow water? I'm heading up to a resort on Cedar Island this Saturday for a weeklong family vacation and would love to get the kids out to catch some walleyes

I would check out the areas where the river channel narrows down. Pretty easy to find on a map. Shallow running cranks along the shore is a good bet, as well longlining a spinner with Jumbo Leeches. I would give these two a try. You may get a lot of bass also, but that is fun too!ScottS

thanks for the info on Cedar Island, I should have been a bit more specific, I'm looking for info on Cedar Lake, near Annandale.

How about Rice? It's usually this time of year that I can find some big crappies on the south end of the lake, but what I'm really looking for is walleyes, and the hottest waters w/in an 45 drive from Saint Cloud (mom and dads house)

hey, Winks, what resort are you going to?
I have always gone to riverside every year on the weekend after opener. I like it there very much, but would also like to hear what everyone thinks of the other resorts and campgrounds in the area. The hoseshoe chain is my favorite place to go, so I would like to start going there more than once a year. Cant get enough of those cats, although all every one else in our party wants to fish is walleyes. Any ideas on different places to stay? Also I was wondering what the boat traffic and fishability is like later in the year. When I go up there is not that many people there yet but I think that probably changes later in the summer. Thanks, Dave

BigDave, I'll be staying at Riverside. Last year was the first year our family group stayed at Riverside and everyone enjoyed their stay. Its closeness to the Twin Cities is a big plus since not all of the family members can stay all week. A few years ago I was at Graham's Island View Resort over on Horseshoe Lake and thats nice too. The boat traffic is pretty heavy during the day on Cedar Island on the weekends but not too bad during the week. I usually fished early morning and late evening and things were pretty quiet then.

Snowball,

I haven't fished Rice myself for almost two weeks because of a family vacation up north. But I was nailing eyes pretty good before then and I talked to my brother who fished it last Monday and they filled out between the storms pulling shad raps in 6-8 ft of water. Fish shallow(10ft or less) with spinners and crawlers/leeches, shad raps or live bait rigs. You'll likely catch a few smallies also while chasing the eyes. There are some real nice smallies there(I'ver caight three 19 - 19.5" this summer). I might make it out yet this evening but I've got a lot to do before I can even think about it.

Best of luck!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
