River

Recommended Posts

I went down to the river on Friday the 26th and caught a good 10 pound plus walleye. Not to mention the numerous good sized northerns. I'm telling you guys, slip bobber fishing is the way to go at the river! Has anyone else been down there lately? Let me know how you did.

I went down there last night after dark and caught 2 nice crappies, one 11" and one 12" 4 decent northerns and 0 walleye. I was there when you caught that walleye. Your right it was a nice fish. The biggest I have seen come out of this stretch of the river. Did you measure it? It looked to me like it was at least 28"

andy j- where were you fishing when i caught that walleye? next time we'll have to introduce ourselves. i did'nt measure it but i'm sure it was all of 28". around what time did you get those crappies?

scott s- i'm pretty sure the spawn was out of her, she did have a pretty fat stomach but it was also pretty loose. she was also extremely beat up and scared.

Hey fellas, I was to the scsu dam for about a half hour to an hour today. I had to take a break from studying. ahh.....
I had 3 strikes, One northern around 26 inches. Nothing special in the middle of the day. (The water went down a lot in the last 2 weeks.) I haven't been down there for a while.
Good luck

crappeye,
I was the guy that came over to look at it when you caught it. The guy you asked for a net. My name is AJ.

Went down to the river last night again. No walleyes but there definately is no shortage of northerns. I caught atleast 10, there a pretty fun fight on a ultralight combo. AJ, right after you left I caught a good 6 pound northern. I also caught a few nice crappies, they started biting after I caught that big pike. I think the crappies are ready to move in but the **** pike are keeping them out.

I just got back for the river, I caught 2 pike, 1 smallmouth and 2 largemouth. I can't remember the last time I caught a largemouth in this stretch of river. A lot of goof balls down there throwing cranks and spinnerbaits. The walleye fishing should be good down there for opener. AJ

I hear you about the crankbaits and spinnerbaits. I guess there was a DNR CO down there the other day and just told a guy to go home. He was casting a spinner bait and wasn't fined. Just got sent home.
Finals are was to hecktic right now to get down there. Walleye season in a few days now!!!
Good luck to all that are fishing down there.

I went down there this morning. I caught 2 nice walleyes right away. then after about a hour I left, I was sick of people casting over my line. Some people just don't get it. Me and my buddy opened on rice lake and we did terrible. We missed some eyes trolling but got nothing but a few bullheads livebait rigging. I think we would of picked up a few walleye slip-bobbering but my buddy wanted to rig. This weather sucks! I should move down to Iowa in the spring time. AJ

No, you shouldn't go to Iowa. You shoul dcome to Wisconsin. The fishing has been great here in Madison! But I still can't wait to get home to Minnesota. Only three more tests...

Gerd, The badger state does have some great fishing but it is just as cool there as it is here in MN. I am originally from Iowa. When I first moved up here I thought that there was not a big difference in climate between the 2 but there is. The ice always goes out a month before it does in MN. The average temp. in april/may in iowa is 55-65 degrees. and in MN it is 40-55. We went down for a fishing trip on april 10 of this year on a lake that my parents live on. The water temp was 53 degrees the water temp a month later in MN this year is 45 degrees. I think that if we would of not had that 2-3 days of warm weather this spring a few weeks ago there would still be some ice on some of the northern lakes. AJ

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey guys,
I am new to this forum. Just thought I would make sure my password is working. I was at the dam yesterday and caught 5 crappies, a small mouth and watched 5 & 10 lb. catfish caught.
Anyone else going down lately?

Holly Bear

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
