Big fish Lake

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone in here is a fellow fisherman of big fish lake. I make annual attempts for crappies, and have done very well out there. With walleye season coming to a close soon, Its time to take after the crappies. Any tpoic you have on this lake I'd like to hear.

I have fished Big Fish for over ten years now. The crappies are sure hit and miss. When you find them, they generally nice sized, but not many of them. I think the lake gets hit hard though, maybe it gets overfished? It seems like there was better fishing years ago.
If you lay into the slabs, remember, keep a few, but throw a few back for next year. If we all do this, it will insure good fishing for all of us for many years to come.

I agree with skeets. I used to fish this lake and do very good when i was younger with my uncles. Now it seems the crappies are very hit and miss, but nice when you do get them.

Bigguns, Borch has been fishing Big Lake and I believe he said he has been doing pretty good. I am sure he will see this post and respond. I have not been out there all year and won't hit it again until the walleye season opens again.ScottS

Scotts? You calling me out? wink.gif

Well I haven't fish Big Fish for 4 or 5 years. We really did well on crappies there end of February into March fishing the deep water south of the bar in the north bay.

But back to something I know more about. Went out to Big Lake again Tuesday night and did pretty well. Kept enough for a meal of fresh crappies and threw the rest back. You also need to sort. There's a really strong class of 5" crappies in the lake right now. So the future looks good. The fish we kept and many we threw back were around 1/2 lb with a few heavier. Get away from the villages(really these are pretty small villages this year. Never seens so few houses on Big Lake) and you should find fish. We've been doing well in 21-24 ft of water fishing over the soft bottom. If you find where they are hanging you should have fish on your electronics all night. No guarrantee that you catch them though. Found our most active fish 4-8 feet off bottom. Also fish cruising 5-8 ft under the ice. If you fish these you won't get many bites but they tend to be big slabs.

Well that's what I know. There is more details in the "please help me catch something" thread. Gotta get ready for the Brainerd Extravaganza and then a family trip to florida. Busy times ahead. But I'll be looking for a report when I get back in a couple of weeks.

Good Luck!

Ive had a great time fishing it in recent years, and the crappies are real slabs if you can find em. I was out there last night waiting for the night run to come through and only ended up with one that i pulled out of the weeds. Which is not typical of this lake in this time of the season. last year at this time we were bringing home quite a few more than right now. Ive gotten to know some of the locals on the lake pretty well, and they say they havn't seen any at all and are also waiting for them to turn on. They didn't believe me when i said i pulled four out of the lake this year.

I have heard it's because of the drought. I know in my area ( meeker co.) the sloughs that they trap minnows in have dried up.

Excuse my ignorance, but was is driving the bait prices? Usually the shortage is due to a late ice-out from the swamps and streams. This year should have been much better.

I should probably learn to use the 6+ containers of lures I have collecting dust in my tackle box. We got on a decent crappie bite the last couple of evenings and I broke out some plastics.  I caught some crappies on them ,just need to build my confidence in using them! I did notice they didn't seem to hold on to them as long as minnows!

      Great news, thank Skunked

Minnows are 50 cents each, and leeches are $50 a pound.

Absolutely. I get full bars all-along the drive from Cook to The Landing, and out into Head O Lakes bay. I can't say that I've stared much at my phone signal anywhere else besides on my way to Black Bay. We still don't get much for service there because there are a lot of steep slopes with tall trees in the way. That was expected though. The tower is definitely providing better service to the area in general IMO.

Any updates on this new tower? Has it helped AT and T customers throughout the lake get better service?

Thanks for the heads up. Cigar.

The price will blow your mind if they get some

Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!
