Heading up with the family on Saturday to fish Star for a week.

Any current reports or info? Mainly targeting eyes, but any info appreciated. May have to go for some panfish as well to keep the boys occupied..

Thanks

Our fishing league fished Star last night, 8 boats, no crappies very few bass and a couple of walleyes, I heard they were very deep 20-30 feet. 1 guy caught a sunfish at 20 feet.

Another fishing league member adding his 2 cents worth. We lindy rigged leeches from 6-7:30 pm and caught 3 little walleyes. At 7:30 we tried cranks for some reason and while it wasn't fast we did get a 16" walleye a small northern and a 16" largemouth. Just about anything that runs 10-12 ft deep worked for us in just about any color. Find the weed edge (about 14 ft) and try to stay on it. Going down wind was useless, all strikes came while going upwind. Really slow, I think is the key. Good luck this weekend.

So how is the bass fishing at Star? See any up in the shallows or is everythng just deep? Looks like that lake has lots of structure if i remember right. Could be mistaken though. Ill post hear sunday nite to tell how i did.

Well im back from our bass tourney. We mostly fished the reeds and pulled up about 15 bass from range from 1-2.5 pounds. Caught a couple in 3 pouund range. The biggest bass was 5 pounds and some odd ounces crankbaiting over 15ft of water. Plenty of perch that followed, alot of little guys. A few nice sunnies off the reeds in 6-8ft of water. Well thats all i know and im dead tired. Nite

Well, we're back and I have to say that cold front kicked our tails!!! We did have some success w/ crappies on Sunday before the front and again Friday as it started to warm back up running orange spinners w/ fatheads in 11-14' of water just above the weeds. Lots of Rock Bass and those annoying 15-20" snakes. We found very few walleyes wanting to cooperate. Tried trolling, rigging, etc with no luck day or night. We could find them on the graph in classic spots, but I swear they had lockjaw...

Oh yeah, my 13 year old did pull an accidental 4.5lb largemouth on a spinner rig as well. Dug him down into those thick weeds and a good battle took place on that one.

Oh well, I guess we all need to be given a good dose of humility on occasion... :-)

Bummer smitty,

Yep Paul, especially in August when it gets down to 40 at night and only up to 57 during the day!!!

We didn't make it to Little Pine. A bit more of a hassle on the trip when the wives and kids are along. Dad and I will probably come up to BP in late September or early October for a long weekend and the Little Pine night bite.

How's fishin been for you this year?

Thanks smitty.
I think I'll take ya up on that one this year. I've felt about as useful as a one legged man in a butt kicking contest around the forums here this season.. Kinda looking forward to getting the fish house out...

Cool, I'll let ya know. My wife is going on her own little vacation in September (to Norway!!) and won't be back until the 27th, so we're probably talking early October this year if I can find a resort still open..

Later, Dave

Woodlands resort on Dead Lake has a cabin they rent year round. It is a newer 2 story cabin and it is really nice.

Thanks, I think Whispering Pines has something available until mid October or longer too (not cheap, but it's a pretty nice place)..

Yep, wife's Mom was born & raised in Norway so they're going back (first time in about 15 years) to visit family. I'll be doin' the Mr. Mom thing!!

Oh yeah, talked to Dad tonight and he says if the shoulder hurts too bad he'll reel in those eye's for ya too!!! tongue.gif

Just wondering if there are any new updates out on Star. My wife and I will be making our annual trip up to Ebert's 9/28 until Labor Day. I would really like to get into some walleyes or northerns, since I haven't done too well on either since we've been @ Ebert's, but the panfish almost make up for it...

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
