Thanx Hangbelly,
Will be staying on Breazy Point for about 5 days this weekend. If I remember correctly that is not too far from there. I heard leaches are the best bet. Is there anything elese I should try?.

Last week we had some success trolling for walleyes at night. We were in about 5-8' of water trolling with yellow "Mister Twisters" and trailing with eaither a leach or a rainbow. We would start trolling at dusk and troll for a couple hours. We hit them as soon as we would troll into the hard rocky bottoms. We had the most success in the far west portion of the bay south of Birch Point all the way to the Bayview Lodge.

Good luck.

If your in that area....try the two 14' humps on the SE side of Comet Island. We fished that area late in the day then went to troll the bay at dusk.

Boater,
I am still getting most of my fish using a plain lindy rig with minnows as bait. Leeches and crawlers are also getting a few fish on different days and different areas.
A jig and minnow will always get fish for you no matter where you fish if there are walleyes under you.
Good fishing!

I must agree minnows are still a hot bait right now!
Earlier this week just for fun I ran some rapalas in 30' to 40' under my cannons! I must say this will produce excellent size a quanity fish! We managed to get our 12 fish in two hours and managed to put back a bunch! Alot of guys say its to early for this but I proved it wrong! This is very effective for deeper fish that will not bite on other methods! I was running on both lines two perch (original floationg) raps! I have found that floating raps are the easiest to really hug the bottom with the cannons! Also the bigger the rap the better! Try it its impressive!

When you mention a plain lindy rig...how long of a snell do you use? Plain steel hook, or have you experimented with colored hooks? Do you typically just drag the weight a foot or two off the bottom, or are you bumping it a lot? Im just curious...usually I am using colored hooks and drag a sinker about 2 feet off the bottom with a 5-6' snell. It works pretty good, but I like to try whats working the best as well. Thanks.

When I was hitting the bumps off Comet Island, I was using a plain hook and a leech. I did have a yellow float about 8" off the hook and the snell was about 3.5 - 4' long.

P.S. Does anyone know the "clown" who lives in the HUGE log cabin at far west end of the bay South of Birch Point? He came ripping into the bay between a couple of small boats, in his big speed boat. He must have been in a hury to get home and count all his money.

Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!

Been out couple times this last week. Between the rain and wind there really was only one day this past week where it was actually warm out fishing.  Water temps are low mid 50s yet, not much change from last week.  Fish are still holding out off the first break on some area lakes and right up in the boat channels and back bays of others.   Been keeping it pretty simple as far as tackle used. Having the best luck with the lil hustler tubes under a small float or throwing the Bobby Garland baby shads with a 1/32 jig head.  The Bobby's have definitely been my big fish catcher this spring.

The water looks low but appears to be on the rise. We will be there  the week after opener. I have been going since 1981 and enjoying the experience. We love the variety of fish we catch and release each year. Ice went out a bit earlier than in years past. Water may be warmer and plan to target some crappies. We fish predominately in Sand Point as we camp. Good luck all and tight lines. We may consider the hike to Lake Lucille which we did 2 years ago.

On an off light precipitation today. Hoping the weather this weekend will be nice so I can get out and crappie fish and check the weather. My yard has standing water and the driveway is a mess. Lot of lakes are near standard water levels which is good. Heard they are done stripping eggs on cut foot. Shaping up to be a good opener. Last year fished open water 60+ days and 28 different lakes. Hopefully bump both those numbers up this year
