Just wondering what everybody else's tactics for opener is gonna be. My group usually starts with what has worked in the past, slow trolling with black jigs and minnows in the Hinsdale Isl. area near the Oak Narrows. This has always worked for us in the past regardless of the wind/sun/temp/water temp on the opening weekend. Do you advanced fishmen have a "fool proof" spot like this, or do you pick your spots depending on the conditions. Also do you experts out there think the ice out date has a dramatic effect on the fishing those first 2 weeks or so of the year. The fishing seems to be the same for us regardless of the conditions. We always seem to be able to catch a bunch of good eater size walleyes, but usually struggle to get into the better sized (20+ inch) fish. 17 days to go! I got so impatient that I went carp fishing on the MN river down here in Mankato, can't compare it with the 'eyes, but still fun reeling in those 15+ pounders.

JP,
Last year was my first time on the Big V. We caught eaters Lindy rigging through the narrows last year 1st of June, but like you, we couldn't get anything bigger. I'm going up June 1 this year so let me know how you do. wink.gif I live up in Chaska and my wife and I are going to check out Shields Campground, do you know any thing about the lake or grounds? You can e-mail me at [email protected]. Thanks, good luck:d

hoodow (spelling?) point, is a DNR camping ground on West Vermillion. Every eve. walleyes are between two islands. go out the bay and take a right - if you see a house on the left and house on the right on two islands, you are in the correct spot along with number of boats (also at the entrance of the narrows)

Hey Tom,
Hoo Doo Point is located in Pike bay on the east end. smile.gif
You know...right where those two houses
are on the right and on the left and on an island? smile.gif
I think you better bring a GPS with you
the next time. smile.gif

Water Temps 48-52. I tried for crappies and caught two walleye. I can't even crappie fish. 1/32 ounce jig and a tiny minnow

Looks like you could use a FM hat. 😉    The future son in law prefers the lump coal.  He’ll start it in coal starter over a propane burner, then dump in it his smoker grill as needed.   Congrats on the clean break “over there”.

Should really start a What yeah Smoking thread!    Another fun place we tried when up in Duluth. OMC stands for "Oink, Moo, Cluck" They serve pork cracklins for starter to test their sauces on.

On the east side of St. Boni. It's not too far from me. A friend lives in St Boni and loves the place. I haven't tried it yet.

First time ever going there with the wife. Little spendy but they make some darn good piles of meat! We had the brisket! 😋

I have heard it's because of the drought. I know in my area ( meeker co.) the sloughs that they trap minnows in have dried up.

Excuse my ignorance, but was is driving the bait prices? Usually the shortage is due to a late ice-out from the swamps and streams. This year should have been much better.

I should probably learn to use the 6+ containers of lures I have collecting dust in my tackle box. We got on a decent crappie bite the last couple of evenings and I broke out some plastics.  I caught some crappies on them ,just need to build my confidence in using them! I did notice they didn't seem to hold on to them as long as minnows!
