To me the whole lake is beautiful but...I think the back side of pine island is the best. It's like being able to have a boat in the boundary waters. Hopefully it won't get too developed, but I can't blame anyone for wanting to build anywhere on the lake.

I agree, the East side looks like a Canadian lake, while the west side is far too developed and looks more like a central Minnesota lake. But the whole lake is leaps and bounds better than any in the world. Lets keep it that way.

What side of the lake do you think is the most beautiful? I think the hands down winner is the east side and anyone who disagrees must be lost! tongue.gif

Since you mention building on the lake. Are there any plans in the future to expand building on the east side of the lake? Who owns the land on the north shore of the East Side?

Just curious if anyone knows the future plans for this land.

Hi Tom,
There are public meetings being held in
St.Louis county this spring to develope
a new land use plan for Vermilion.

Much of the undeveloped land on the far
east and north side of Big Bay, belongs
to mining interest.

It is hoped by many of us that the land will be kept in it's natural state. The
Lake Vermilion Conservation Association
and the Vermilion Sportsmen club, are very much involved in the process.

All the meetings are open to the public
and you can be heard. I urge anyone who
has an interest in the future of this
beautiful area, to attend the meetings.

The developement vultures are waiting to turn it all into a playground, just for the rich and famous. Let's all work
together to keep Vermilion the way she is.

The east end is more unspoiled due to less development, but it all depends on where you look I guess. If you compare Stuntz Bay to Norwegian Bay, well.......

612er,
The north side on the other side of pine is boundrey waters, as far as beauty, they are equal , east is over all more people, the, west is more protected from that, but any given day it all is nice and what a great place to work!!

Are you guys saying the Northeast side of Pine Island would be a nice place for a cabin. We have been looking for years and have found a couple cabins south of Matson Island around the point. Is this a nice area? Quiet? Good fishing?

Thanks

PSU,
That would be a real nice area to have a cabin, as usual eveyrwhere is close to decent fishing ...trout lake would be close also...you would also be protected from most winds most of the time except for that straight north wind, wich isn't all that often anyhow except in the fall...I do shorelunch back there a fair amount and I like it back there.Good Fishing!!

Hi PSU,
The Matson Island area is very nice and
quiet. It is in a roadless area just to the south of the BWCA.
Plenty of good fishing and that part of the lake is very beautiful. smile.gif

Nice!   It would be great if they had some kind of brake, so you don't end up on your neighbors YouTube video going down the driveway! 😆

Last month I went searching online for a trailer jack with pneumatic tires. Instead I found the video below showing a relatively quick and easy upgrade to your existing jack:     It's worked pretty well. I definitely had to mess around with finding the right combination of spacers, washers, and locknut pressure that wouldn't bind up the wheels. However, it is a pretty sweet setup and allows me much better control. We live at the end of a half-alley. My garage faces the end so when I need to hook my boat up to the truck, I have to pull it out into my driveway and then swivel it 180 degrees to face towards the street. The handle is what really makes the difference and now the trailer jack wheels don't slide on the asphalt. Has anyone else done this conversion?

I've got a pile of crawlers ready to go - a nice side benefit of all the rain in the metro lately.   At the very least, I hope that the remaining trappers are making some better money off of the higher prices. I would think that it would be a great way for local kids to make some cash. I can see why it wouldn't make for a great way to make a living as an adult.

Went out yesterday with the sunshine. I did find crappies in the shallows on a darker stained lake with Temps at 58 degrees. They had no interest in my baits

That's part of it.  Several recent years of drought have definitely played a role.   There's other factors too.  MN does not allow importation of live bait from other states either.  That really affects the amount of golden shiners available, most of which are not trapped here.  In other words, demand exceeds supply.   Lots of bait trappers and dealers have simply hung it up in recent years.  Its hard work for not much money.  The two nearest me are both done as of last October.  They both told me its just not worth it anymore.  One of them had been there for 45 years.   My advice would be to learn how to effectively fish with artificial lures more often.  I've slowly weened myself off the use of live bait nowadays.

Think the Free crawlers in the back yard are going to take a hit this summer! 🤭

Correction, rainbow minnows are at least 75 cents each, and leeches are $60 per pound. lol

Their coming! Was poking around southern center mn last Friday and found about 20 on a hill side, all to small to pick yet.  Spots on the GPS! 🤗

Water Temps 48-52. I tried for crappies and caught two walleye. I can't even crappie fish. 1/32 ounce jig and a tiny minnow
