shwalleye,

Might consider hiring a guide-- you'll gain years worth of knowledge on spots and presentations in a single day.

Tips for fishing Gull this time of year? Keep an open mind and stay mobile. Don't spend more than 20 minutes working a spot. If you find fish, they'll usually bite. Key daytime depths on the lake right now range from 15 all the way to 30 feet of water, depending on sky conditions and wind. Pay close attention to points that extend well off the shoreline and provide expansive living space for baitfish such as perch. The ends or tips of these points are always the first place to look.

One interesting presentation that not a lot of anglers try on the lake is power trolling a spinner / leech combination. Tony Puccio (Owner of Bait Rigs Tackle) put on a virtual seminar last July on Gull-- right in the middle of a hot sunny day-- fishing a #3 orage blade and leech behind a bottom bouncer. Raised more than a few eyebrows among local guides.

Enjoy your trip; let me know if you have any other questions.

Toad-Wouldn't the leech just sit there and spin? Or is that the purpose of power trolling with them? I'd like to know more about that. Thanks

Flick,

So long as you keep your trolling speed down, and use a good ball bearing swivel, no, the leech should run nicely behind the bouncer. Granted, you can't move quite so fast as you can with a crawler, but it's still a dandy option at times. Better yet, in some cases, go with a floater rig, which allows you to pause and flutter the leech right in the face of the fish.

Run the rig beside the boat at the speed you plan to troll first. This allows you to get an idea of what the bait will look like behind the boat.
