Let the shoreline bite begin!<P>Saturday was a incredible fishing day for me.<BR>Monster perch, and Monster Walleyes.<BR>22 fow over sand and rubble. The perch were fast and furious through the day.<BR>Kept a nice limit of perch from 11-14 inches, great big fat ones. I have no idea how many I caught, but I went through 2 big scoops of shiners, both heads and tails.<P>Now for the really cool part. I caught around a dozen walleyes, and only kept 3 that were under 19 inches. Four of them went past 27 inches. The biggest went past the wood handle on my big dipper measuring stick, and that quits at 30. It was very close to 31 I would guess.<P>A west river brass Sutton spoon did the damage on all the big eyes. Big fish just can’t leave that spoon alone. They just about rip the rod from your hand. When the bottom looked like it was starting to move, I’d flash the spoon a couple of times, then I’d reel up to about 4 feet from the bottom, and shake it. Holy cow for vicious strikes!<P>The vexilar would be lit up like a Christmas tree when the perch were going, when it would go blank it was time to take a firm grip of your rod, cause there were toothy critters on the prowl. All the big eyes surprisingly came with the sun high in the sky.<P>Bonus fish included a couple of dandy Jacks, and a couple of sumo pout.<P>Lost 3 spoons to who knows what.<P>A very memorable day on the woods!<BR>

Widetrack,<P>We fished 12 mile this weekend and had limited success. The male fish are starting to move on top of the reef, so it won't be long now. We caught about 20 perch each day, usually 17 were males and 3 were females. Not a lot of sauger and walleye action though, enough for supper but no big guys.

Thats good to hear WT, you called it too, some beauties for sure. I take it that same place you mentioned in the baitstore Friday? What happened Sunday? I got blanked at the Derby, 1300 anglers and 11 fish! Alot of angler hours for those few fish huh! I thought of you fishing up there often that day during the derbies 4 fishless hours! Brrr Humbug, nice weather eh!<P>Fisky

Widetrack,<BR>Great report! we hit them like that a while<BR>back. what a RUSH! We hit them with slender<BR>spoon's. They would hit-M so hard it would stop the second hand on your watch! and the<BR>perch are like NFL football's this year for<BR>sure EH! Them HAWG'S are movin in for the kill! (shallow!).. Slam-M!<BR>"VET"

Fisky:<P>Sunday I was out of bait!<P>Yes, it was the spot we discussed. No spoon feeding please! wink.gif

Out of bait! You had a very BIG bag of dead minnows that day too! Spoonfeeding! I'm kinda curious about it haha! Just give me the X and the Y!!! Shees I woulda emailed you but heck they don't get thru there. E? S? W?<P>I spose I could look for a 20 inch wide track out on the lake somewhere over 22 fow {was that from the bottom of the ice!!!}, but I spose you drag a big branch around!<P>It sure be nice to get out there while this weather stays nice eh?<P>Fishing....fiskyknut<p>[This message has been edited by fiskyknut (edited 02-23-2004).]

Fisky:<P>I always measure the depth from the top of the water. Frozen or soft.<P>Yeah, she put like 3 scoops in each scoop of shiners. I thought I'd have bait for 3 weekends!

You guys are giving me a belly-ache!

I walked out onto the river last nite and got 5 between 18 and 22 in 2 hrs, others nearby were doing much better than me though. 11 fow, from the bottom of the ice with a whistler jig and salty. Saw 2 large fish caught by another guy nearby to us so thats encouraging anyways. I'd love to get out to your spot and get on them like that..... I love them Perch!<P>Fisky

That was the craziest perch bite I've ever seen. My thumb looks like piece raw hamburger today.<P>Sounds like the river fishing is going good!

Hey Bob, Bring your sleds and your new big hut and some binocs and we'll go hunt for the wiley, wary, and elusive LOTW WT!!!<P>He's got a Widetrack and an otter and an old Xmas tree dragging behind that!!!<P>When is your big upcoming sleeper trip again?<P>Fisky

Posted

Hey Fisky -<P>The Sleeper trip is March 26th.<P>I'll be up the weekend before that - 3/19 with my son and 19 year old brother-in-law. We are staying in a motel in Baudette and fishing with my portable. Want to hook up then? Maybe we can talk Widetrack into letting us follow him rolleyes.gifsmile.gif.

The perch bit through all day long. The walleyes came through in small windows mid-day. It seemed like when the perch cleared out, good things were going to happen soon. <P>I didn't even get to finish the day out, as I was out of bait. I suppose I quit around 4.<P>I'll have to see what my schedule looks like in March, 1/2 the time I don't know what I'm doing tomorrow. The next 2 weekends I have 3 day hockey tournaments.<P>Will the fish still be there? Good question.<BR>The darn things have fins, and can swim. So who knows for sure? I've had luck there in the past this time of year though.

I'm just razz'n you with the buttering! You know me I won't spill the beans!!! Lot's of prespawn walleyes out there under the late ice. Like I told you on Friday I'd sure like to get up there more often around opener as well. Spent alot of hours up around there on the water at the end of may last year when the PWT was in town....Too much fun, and very little boat traffic.<P>fiskyknut

Nice post Widetrack. You sure know how to make a guy at work hurt. The good thing is that me and a buddy will be up fishing on Sat. and at least then I can do something about it. Like try and find some of that great action. I never heard of that lure you were using - can they be found at most bait stores do you know? It sure sounds like you had a blast, hopefully we can use up 1/4 of the minnows you used.

Any secrets are safe with me guys.<P>I know it is always a roll of the dice when you wet a line. That's why I am so dog tired today - I hung out too long on URL last night waiting for the evening bite that we had on Saturday. I lost the bet smile.gif and did not get to bed until 12:30. It was a buggar to get up at 6:00 for the Monday morning ritual!<P> Regardless of what happens I'd love to fish with you guys.<P>------------------<BR><BR>The Doctor is in.............Everybody stand back!!!

Fivebucks:<P>They are hard to find, and expensive to use.<BR>They run around 4-5 bucks each, and I tend to loose lots of them.<P>There is a local sporting goods store up here that carries them, but I usually buy the whole lot when they come in!<P>I just placed a order for a dozen more this morning.<P>I did find and order them on the Net at one point though, I'd post the link, but it's forbidden here.<P>A friend of mine (darn good fisherman) showed me them quite a few years ago, and I use them almost exclusively now.<p>[This message has been edited by widetrack (edited 02-23-2004).]

Thanks Widetrack,<BR>I'll search a bit on the net. We're working on getting a sled or two for Sat. and have ourselves an adventure day. Not that I would expect it but my buddy is making me ask, if you have any pointers (ie: north, south, east, or west) for us you can e-mail me at mheitz at lakestatecoin dot com. Don't worry about it if you'ld rather not say any more, I completely understand. Thanks.

I did good at early ice with the sutton, didnt catch as many as the others but the fish were alot better sized. Only one working at that time was the silver. Hopefully i can get back out and try it agian, havent been out since dec.<P>------------------<BR>Where's my crew??

Posted

I'm not going to get into specifics about location. <P>Although my brain always feels more comfortable while I'm heading North for some reason.<P>It's time to put your thinking caps on, think of pre-spawn areas, think of shorline areas that hold em. Think of areas of shorline with sand, rubble, hard bottoms. If you want sheer numbers of little eyes, and sauger go deep. If you want quality Walleyes go shallower and get off the mud.<P>Anyway, thats my take on it. Your mileage may vary. <p>[This message has been edited by widetrack (edited 02-23-2004).]

I have seen Sutton spoons in the bait & tackle stores at Sioux Narrows and Nestor Falls, they are also a good lake trout lure, fished a sutton out of my lake trout tackle box today, will try it tomorrow on the pond. WT, I appreciate and admire your knowledge of LOW, keep posting.

Widetrack,<BR>Thanks for the info. on here. I'm excited to do a little exploring on Sat. and I know we'll have fun. That's what's fun about fishing is finding them and trying to outthink them (I usually get out thunked). Now I just gotta get through a few days of work before a couple days at the deer shack and the big pond.

Posted

The Sutton Spoons were extremely easy to find on the net. Just do a google search. Widetrack..what model and size do you have the best luck with?

Posted

Fivebucks:<P>Hope you have a great time.<P>I get out-thunked plenty myself. A good game plan, hard work, and perserverance go along way in fishing though. Save the card playing & beer drinking for back at the shack. I usually only have enough energy left back at camp for a short happy hour, and supper. Then I'm snoring & dreaming of where I think the bite will be tomorrow.<BR>(oh alright... maybe a long happy hour from time to time!)<P>Braxt: <P>West river sutton, brass. I'm pretty sure there is only 1 west river spoon. Could be wrong. Give a call to Sreiff sporting in Warroad, ask for Wade. They have some now that are gold on one side silver on the other. He can order in some for you too.<P>I've at times had good luck on the paper thin flutter type as well. They take lots of patience to fish with though as they take a long time to get to the bottom, and they travel forever off to the side. I've had success with this at times when the nice eyes are fickle.

Can you guys drive a cat blindfolded?<P>Actually it would be fun if it works out.

Fisky -<P>Do you have a machine. I can haul my son on my Widetrack and I have an Indy Sport for my brother-in-law. It would be great if this works out!<P>------------------<BR><BR>The Doctor is in.............Everybody stand back!!!

Bob, I have a buddy coming up from the cities either that weekend or the one before, not sure yet.<P>WT, I could ride on the back of your sled blindfolded no problem!!! Operating a sled by ear may present difficulties though. I've been checking my email frequently this morning in anticipation of a much more detailed report! Haha!<P>So did they bite good thru the whole day or what? Think they'll still be biting out there?<P>Those were sure some nice rods you showed me on Friday Widetrack, I really like that rodcase of yours too!!! <P>Your friend....Fisky!<P>

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff!  Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of.  There are fish in both areas.     Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers.  Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home.   On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.   On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    You never know when the fish will move through.  Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success.  Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River...  The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation.  A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice.  There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year.    The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd.    Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle.  Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish.  Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats.    Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees.  Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them.  Check with a NW Angle resort for info.   Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective.  Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick.  Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday).  Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm.  Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds).  Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up.  Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips.  Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action.  I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite.  When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook.  Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook.  May try some pike suckers next trip.   Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow).  Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake.  Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top.  Will probably have to block it up again next time up.   Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
