FM gathering in Crookston roll call....

Recommended Posts

I am looking for feedback for an FM gathering in Crookston this summer.. I am thinkging July 10th weekend. Fishing the Redlake river or Red River. Pending on water available in the rivers boats and shore fishing will be a great adventure..

If the river is anything like last year we should have a great place to have a gathering below the dam.

Crookston has a great park for camping along the river and several hotels and motels.. for preferred rates just tell them Wiskers sent you.. The Northland Inn and AmericInn are your best deals.

looking for feedback and ideas for this event to get them city slickers out of the metro up to the boondocks.. lol lol.. Small boats and River Pro's welcome if we use the Red Lake River... I will keep posted on water levels... ...

Let me know your thoughts...

Wiskers, that sounds like fun. I definitely can't commit though. I've got 4th of July immediately before and a big trip planned starting the middle of the next week. I'll give a definite maybe. I'd imagine you're thinking about a cat chasing affair, eh? Couple beers, some frogs, a cat or three- sounds like a good time to me.
Who else is coming to this event???

I'd probably make her iffin it's gonna be held on the Red, the GFKS area has some pretty decent fishing. Not so sure if I could be 'lured' to the Crookston dam though.

Pray for cold and an extended ice season!!!

Nut.. I tell ya what, I would like you to try to make it. The Red Lake river has much more abundant fish.. smaller area to find them in..

It will be a great time.. Hope to see you here..come over this summer and test it out.

Hope to see you here Scoot...

I have'nt done too much fishing around Crookston. I've made a few dozen float trips over the years from the old Mallory bridge down to EGF though and that strecth of river can be pretty dang good at the right time of year. Fished around Huet {?} park a few times and got some decent Bass there.

Hopefully the tribs will have a bit more water in them this year than last.

Fisky, Wiskers is definitely right- the Red Lake River can by nothing short of spectacular. Not a ton of holes for the buggers to hide out in either.
It'll be a fun event, I'm sure. I'll be there if I can.

Keep me posted Wiskers, I'm game if I'm free.

I would think July 10th-ish +/- is a good post spawn time line for a big fish bite on the Central Region?

Yup-Yup....Sounds like a Hoot to me.

Yeppers Ed that is what I was hoping for. Get them while the are putting on the feed bags before spawn..

Unless the water is real low and it heats up faster again.. Gonna have to keep fingers crossed. I would of had it sooner but June is sooo busy with clients that it would not work..

Hope to see you here.. Bring your frog stomping boots ok.. I want to see them and that Bikini LOL LOL...

I got an idea for the gathering.... We always fish the river below the dam and it is awesome fishing.. but with the low water, not many boats will be able to get in there by then unless we get some good rain amounts.

The river above the dam is deeper and more than likely will be accessable in July.. so maybe we will all stage at Central park and venture out into the river there... In the 10 years I have fished the river, I have only been on that part of the river less than I can count on my hands.. Just don't seem to be able to find the fish up there above the dam.. This would be a good challange for finding the kitties..

Many locals say that they used to catch some nice cats and Walleyes in that area.

We have some good options for that weekend... The sand bar is wide open now and fishing is good in the dam...

For those of you that are going to be here and are camping or staying at the hotels, just let me know if I can help out in any way.. The park should be ok and not full that weekend but I will keep an eye out and can save some areas if I know how many are needing them. Hotels, The Northland Inn is the ticket.. They will set you up as long as you tell them you are with Wiskers...

There is food and a bar in the Inn... If your interested I can even get a DJ and we could have a party on the night of the 9th.. and fish the 10th. So, depending on the number of you that might come up Friday and stay over night for fishing on Sat. and so on.. I got connections for us and that might be a good time...

Need some ideas.......

Ok here goes..
I have a buddy that is a DJ and the Northland Inn will let me use the main banquet room for a bash on Friday night the 9th, and if we get enough fellas that are staying at the Inn she will also give us the hospitaltity room for Sat. night with a bar.

So the big Q. is if enough FMers are going to make it up here I will set it up so we can get great rates for rooms at the Northland Inn, with Restraunt, bar and pool..Dance Fri night and some good beverages then we can fish Sat.

With or with out boats this will be a great weekend of fishing....

I need to get an idea on how many fellas are going to be here for sure on Fri.. Heck we can fish Fri and Sat.. Just let me know what you all think.

Rick>>>>>>>>>>

Let me know if we can get some items like we did on the Shue this winter..I will work on some local stuff also.

Got fingers crossed for good weather that day..

PASS THE WORD............................

I am also thinkin of coming up boatless.
If i do will a med action walleye rod and 8lb test be sufficient? If not i have a 50 dollar gift card for scheels..
Any how, will the shore fishing be good for a loner?
Also, what about bait? should i start catchin some gold eyes or something?

thanks

Wiskers,

I've been hesitant to commit to this because of home obligations, but it's starting to look pretty good. I might not be there for the evening festivities, but I think I'll be able to swing at least some fishing with the crew. Should be a blast!

Beaver... that will be ok if you just plan on going for Eyes and such.. however, some large Muskies have been getting caught on that sort of rig along the shores where we are all going to be fishing.. there will be no loaner fishing here.. I have a feeling that the shores and boats will be full of people fishing. Bigger is always better for snags and that unknow fish in the rivers here.. Heck bring a few setups.. then you can fish for what ever your heart desires.

We will be getting Walleyes, Pike, cats, Carp, sheephead, goldeye, suckers, Muskies, Small Mouth Bass, and maybe Sturgoen. If that does not cover the gauntlet no rig is gonna work LOL...

Hope to see you here Beaverlakeman.. I will put you on the list....

too late Scoot your on the list now LOL...

Is it too late to get in on this? I'm putting together a fishing trip for next week, and I thought maybe we'd start out in Crookston. Be nice to swap lies with some fellow catters. Maybe run up to Cabelas on Sunday and swamp their catfish department.

Man this is going to be one long day. Wiskers, is Ceason's going to have enough suckers for everybody that is coming up for this thing or should I think about picking some up before I leave? Just curious.

WOW,
talk aboutr a great time and super well organized event!!

Wiskers (Rusty) you did one heck of a job.

The catfishing was superb. Nice consistent bite.

The best part were the guys and gals who attended. We had three gals who stayed for most of the event.

They were Rachel, Bridey (sp), and Liz. You guys that have the admiration of these gals can be very proud of them. GREAT PEOPLE!

You guys were a whole lot of fun. I felt like I was in the guys bonding league. I go to a lot of gatheirngs and this is one of the best I've been to.

You were very informative allowing us to move up the learning curve very rapidly. Timdog it was especially great of you sharing your Goldeye secrets. Sorry for spooking your Goldeyes.

I want to thank Mark Edesvold and Liz Miller for the tasty fish fry.

Rusty, thanks again for making it possible to meet all the fine folks who attended this event. Those of you who didn't make it, it was your loss.

If you missed it, seriously consider the 2nd Annual Crookston FM Cat Family Gathering smile.gif

Rusty,
It was nice chatting with you at the access last week before the gathering. After talking with you, I really wanted to come back up for your gathering.

Turns out that I could have juat stayed as our company from Chicago let us know at the last minute they would not be coming. It was too late to plan and come up, but will do my best to come to the next Crookston gathering.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.
    • mbeyer
what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
