I have been out on Maple a couple of times in the past couple weeks and have caught a couple of nice walleyes and a couple crappies but nothing great so far. Graphed alot of fish but couldnt get most to bite. I stopped in at the bait store and all the reports were that they have been doing quite well on maple for walleyes. Have heard a couple of other people saying they did well last weekend. I think I will go out tonight or tomorrow morning and see if I can find them again.

I was wondering if anyone else had any information on Union lake for winter ice fishing. I know it was good this summer for walleyes but I dont know exactly where to fish. Has anyone been out there? Any reports would be cool.

Have been out on Maple acouple times. Seems that the bigger fish want a lot of action. I have been out twice and put one rig down with Crappie Minnow and little jig and a swimming Rap on the other. I have gotten five nicer walleyes one around 4 on the rap and on little walleye and a small crappie on the Live bait. So lots of action is key to what I have found out. Where have you been fishing on maple at? Not that familiar with the lake that much just started fishing it this winter. Keep me posted with Union Haven't fished it but Christmas Break is coming up.

Keep your stick on the ice

Thats pretty good. On saturday a buddy and me went out and caught four nice eyes out from rocky point. Too much fishing pressure to really do much moving around. Yesterday we went out from breezy point and didnt do so hot. Saw a few nice walleyes caught but not much from out houses.

Might try again tonight but not sure where we will be going. I know the eye bight on Union was good this summer and would like to get out and try it sometime but I am not too sure of the ice conditions on the lake yet. I will send in a report tomorrow morning on how we did.

Is the rock point on the east side of the lake? I have been going out right in front of a little access which to me seems to be on the North East side of the lake. I'm not up to date on the lay out of the lake yet. Did you have any luck tonight? Homework kept me from heading out there. Might hit up the lake on Sunday and just wondering if the crappies are starting yet.

No luck last night, one walleye and one crappie over four hours of fishing. Some poeple are beginning to drive out there which along with the snow made for very slushy conditions. My buddy and I were walking out and he fell through a 10' hole that had not been frozen over but was covered in snow. Man o Man you should have seen the look on his face, he thought he went clean through!!!
Talked to one guy that lives on Union and he said that there is not many fishing but a lot of people are beginning to spear and are doing quite well.

OK..thanks Fisky.

I wasn't sure if it was a smaller set of lakes off the upper Red River or not. I took a gander at the map, long way off the rivers.

Eh..But I don't care.

Just so not TOO many lake rats find there way in her is all.

Maple Lake has been pretty good but that lake can be so off and on day to day.

I was out there last week from 12:30 to 8:00pm. 10-12" ice. I took home 3 eyes @ 2-3#, 3 crappies that went 10+", and gave away 2 nice Pike. I also had on two fish that snaped my 15# ice line?????? Must have been large Pike??

Best bite time starts at 12:30 noon. 11 feet of water and 10-12" off the bottom.

I was out from Breezy point.

Happy fishing fellas.

Union lake is another story.. This summer was not very good for eyes... with any luck winter will be better.. Now is the best time for eyes on Union.. be careful of the ice though.. that lake takes a long time to get good ice and watch out for springs.. that lake is dangerous if you dont know where you are going.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
