River Ice on the Red Lake and Red.

Recommended Posts

Howdy all you fellow catters out there.. just a word of caution about ice fishing on the Red and Red Lake Rivers.

Over the last few days the river is freezeing over very fast with the cold nights. Where I have been walking across the river to my deer stand it was open water yesterday and tonight I walked on the ice, about 3". However the water levels have been going up and down like crazy. It is going up about a foot and dropping back down over night causing the edges to slope and be very brittle. It has done this for the past 3 days.

I only have been walking on the ice where I know it is only about 1-2 feet deep there. So please put off the ever so inviting ice fishing until you know it is overly safe. There is not a fish out there worth never being able to chat on FM ever again.

But on a good note, the water clairity is unreal. This is going to be an outstanding winter for under water cameras on the river for locating them pooling fish.

Looking forward to the ice fishing meet on the horseshoe chain.............

Start stocking up on the slip knots and Ice buster bobbers............................................
